Codeworks - Contract at Northwestern Mutual

MAY 2023 TO OCTOBER 2023

Scrum Master

Job responsibilities:

Increased the sprint completion rate of my teams. Sprint committed work vs. completion was low when I started, and large changes in sprint scope was a problem. Both teams are now achieving much better results and completing sprint work with minimal items moving to the next sprint.

Increased the total velocity of both teams.

Helped identify how much work could be completed in a sprint which was beneficial when capacity and PI planning.

Coached the teams to understand story pointing and the benefit of having the entire team involved in the process.

Coached the teams to create better stories. Originally, many stories did not have acceptance criteria or clear details which made it difficult to understand the work.

The teams I worked with were not having retrospectives. I reinstated the retrospectives resulting in the identification of impediments that could be solved. Many risks were identified and addressed, allowing for increased productivity and team unity.

Helped the teams understand the importance of testing within sprints. Worked to make sure that testing was not overwhelmed by the end of the sprint by implementing pair programming where test engineers worked with development early so they would be ready when the story was delivered to QA. This reduced the number of defects found and allowed for a better sprint delivery.

Helped both teams get specific action items out of retrospectives with accountability.

Helped both teams to become more transparent in their discussions about progress and impediments.

Worked with Product Owners, Business Analysts, and Project Managers to refine a definition of ready on the epic level. There were issues with some epics not being clear and the team leads had to use time to do analysis to make an accurate assessment of work.

Delivered sprint updates to upper leadership.

Participated in cross team meetings to make sure dependencies were discussed and updated.

Handed conflict between team members.

Consistently worked on team trust improvements.

Use of JIRA for sprint progress and bug tracking.

Experience with JIRA administration within a project.

Use of metrics to understand where issues need to be addressed.
