Fishing Guide

Self Employed / Total Fisherman - Astoria, OR

May 2017 to October 2023

As a Fishing Guide and First Mate on a 36-foot Yellowfin fishing boat equipped with three 300-horsepower outboard motors, I played a pivotal role in delivering memorable offshore fishing experiences logging over 14,000 hours of sea time, on the “Liberty Gun.” Operating at speeds in excess of 40 mph on the open ocean, my responsibilities ranged from meticulous tackle maintenance to ensuring the overall safety and satisfaction of our clientele.

One of my primary responsibilities involved rigging and maintaining over 30 high-end fishing rods and reels for each trip. This included thorough checks and frequent re-tying of fluorocarbon leaders, leaving no room for weak links that could compromise the pursuit of large pelagic fish. The delicate balance of the tackle system demanded constant attention, as any vulnerability could result in a lost catch of a trip costing over $3400.00 per day.

Proficiency in maintaining the three outboard motors was crucial. Regular oil changes and lower unit lubrication, performed every 100 hours of use, were integral to the boat’s reliability hence these tasks were often performed every 15 days during peak season. Additionally, I oversaw an intricate water exchange system of a sea chest, which facilitated the flow of fresh seawater to two large live bait systems. Managing and securing live Anchovies, a substantial investment at $300 per trip, was part of my routine.

Preparation began well before the customers arrived, with pre-checks, system evaluations, and the initiation of dual GPS systems, Radar, Flir imaging system, dual sounders, course plotter,VHF radio, Satellite phone, safety raft, auto inflating life jackets, Epirb, satellite in-reach unit, and auto-pilot. My commitment to safety extended to being CPR certified and providing thorough safety briefings to our customers on every trip.

During excursions, I actively engaged with clients building rapport and offered guidance on fishing techniques often demonstrating effective strategies to boat large fish. Creating an unparalleled experience for our customers was a priority, ensuring their satisfaction and encouraging repeat business. Beyond the fishing aspect, I handled logistical aspects of each trip, including flushing of fish holds and live bait tanks, replenishing between 400 to 600 ponds of new ice each day and cleaning 36 feet of white interior space to a standard I set whereby, “I would eat off the floor.”

In essence, my role as a Fishing Guide and First Mate was a harmonious blend of technical expertise, meticulous preparation, and a commitment to customer safety and satisfaction. The success of our operations hinged on my ability to dependably show up to perform my duties and maintain the vessel, tackle challenges head-on, adapt and overcome in the event of adversity, and deliver an exceptional and safe fishing adventure for our clients. Getting up at 2:45am and greeting people with a genuine smile each day is an example of the passion I have to be excellent in every endeavour I undertake.
