shapes (expert) - participant report: Stabile Mtetwa Guidelines for usage of the report

This profile summarizes the results of the questionnaire shapes which you recently have completed. The report outlines your strengths and development needs. It focuses on the most significant results. Your answers have been compared with a large group of persons with a similar professional background. On the basis of this comparison a benchmark profile is generated indicating which strengths you can build on in comparison to others, and which competencies you need to take care of to ensure long-tem professional success.

The aim of the report is to give you ideas for your professional and personal development. Of course, your personal development needs depend on your ambitions. Not every competency has the same importance for all positions. Base on your strengths, but keep in mind those factors which, on a long term, could create serious problems or hindrances in your professional life. When reading the report, please keep in mind that all results are based on your questionnaire answers. Based on your personal results of shapes you will find a few suggestions in this report in order to change your behavior by trying certain activities. You will not find any references for literature or seminars, but small concrete steps which you can perform on your own or together with your manager, colleagues or friends. The development tips take, based on the results, into account which way of learning is presumably the most effective for you. When you ask successful managers about what contributed most to their own professional and personal development, almost all will mention significant challenges and hardships in their career. You tend to learn most intensively when you are forced to do so by unusual circumstances, when you are urged to leave your comfort zone and try new behaviors and approaches. A successful development process consists of two essential components. The first component is to understand the steps and measures that need to be taken to change one’s own behaviour. The second component is the actual training process, i.e. learning new behaviors or attitudes in different situations and settings. Only the combination of both components will lead to successful and permanent change.

shapes (expert) - participant report: Stabile Mtetwa Your results

This you can build upon:

You tackle your work with a lot of energy and resilience and remain focused/efficient, even under pressure. You like investing a lot of time in your tasks and setbacks do not dampen your drive. You usually like cooperating with others and contribute constructively to the overall success. You do not mind others reaping the reward as long as your own goals are achieved. When prompted, you support colleagues in developing their own ideas but generally behave in a rather reserved manner and thus rarely contribute to a positive atmosphere.

You work in a highly goal and results-oriented way and consider the cost-benefit ratio in your approach. You consider financial aspects and concentrate your energy on achieving set goals. However, you sometimes want to achieve too many things at once and forget to plan necessary steps and milestones as well as foresee possible difficulties. In this case, your actions seem less structured and confusing to others. This you need to be aware of:

Despite being aware of the importance of useful contacts and relationships, you do not always manage to establish them in practice. You are able to build a network consisting of formal and professional contacts, however, should also try expanding your network at a less formal and instead more social level. Despite generally following your own course and being innovative, you tend to take up others suggestions more than develop your own solutions and bring in your own creative ideas. Especially in unclear situations, you prefer relying on conventional, traditional methods than opting for innovation. You display integrated thinking and are interested in underlying theories. You enjoy intellectual challenges and like acquiring new knowledge. However, your approach is not always targeted and practical with the result that in concrete cases, you sometimes lack specialist knowledge to a certain degree. Furthermore, you attach relatively little importance to being perceived as a specialist and therefore could make a greater effort to keep your knowledge up to date, also beyond your personal interests. shapes (expert) - participant report: Stabile Mtetwa Development activities

Try this:

Cooperate in a specialized or technically-challenging project that requires you to use and stretch your various specialist skills. Where necessary, take the steps required to update your specialist knowledge. Think about what knowledge of statistics and numerical and financial data you should ideally possess in your job. Where are your strengths in this area and where can you still improve? Determine how you want to further develop in these areas. Make a plan with some definite dates. Find out whether the company has any useful continual professional development resources relevant to you or if there are other external courses to improve your professional knowledge. Talk to your manager about which development opportunities you would value.

Read appropriate professional journals and keep yourself informed through exhibitions and congresses about innovations in your area. Spend at least one hour per week keeping yourself up-to-date in your specialist area. Define what specialist requirements are placed on your job. What knowledge, experiences and skills must the ideal occupant of your job possess? Ask your colleagues for their views. Compare your own specialist skills with what they say. Seek feedback from your colleagues and your manager: What is their assessment of your specialist knowledge? Where do your strengths lie? Where are your weaknesses? Draw up a personal development plan.

Get to know people in other companies in your sector and in similar specialist areas in your own company. Establish a network. Define and discuss relevant and current themes regularly (e.g. monthly or quarterly). Exchange thoughts and opinions about your area of specialization with the members of your network.
