Malaka Dassanayake has more than 28 years’ experience as an Environmental Professional in the particular areas of Environmental Management, Environmental Assessing (EIA/IEA) Environmental Feasibilities, Environmental Planning, Environmental Quality Management, Waste Management, Water quality Monitoring, Waste water Management, Disaster Management, Aviation Environment and Urban and Regional Environmental Management. Malaka is an Environmentalist, Biologist, Sociologist, Development Planner and Project Manager worked in various Ministries, Departments, Authorities, Organizations, Companies and Projects funded by International Development agencies.

Malaka began his carrier as an Environmental Planner in Urban Development Authority of Sri Lanka providing his professional inputs for the Resources consent process and Urban Development Planning process to the Urban Development in Sri Lanka attended to the development approval process such as preparation of EIA/IEE /EA reports for the deferent urban development projects .Malaka was the project Manager for Treasury funded Urban Sanitary Composting project develop as a research project with combination of University of Peradeniya Sri Lanka.

Malaka was the Manager of Project Implementation unit and took the responsibility of Coastal Environmental Resource Management component of the ADB assisted Coastal Resources Management Project which was implemented by the Ministry of Fisheries in Sri Lanka and prepare and implemented the Special Area Management conservation plan for Kalipinya Coral Reef conservation which is declared as a Wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka

Malaka was appointed as Healthcare Waste Management Consultant in World Bank assisted Health Sector Development Project under the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka and Malaka carried out the Healthcare waste management program to manage clinical/medical /infectious waste in 75 Hospitals in Southern Province of Sri Lanka. As an expert in waste management, Malaka worked for the Central Environmental Authority which is a regulator for the Environmental matters in Sri Lanka under the Ministry of Environment as a Manager Planning and Implementation of Solid Waste Management projects. Malaka was able to establish more than 150 composting plants in 150 Local Authorities, completed planning work for 10 large scale sanitary landfills and 10 large scale Composting projects. Malaka is a freelance consultant in waste management sector and carried out lot of assignments in waste management in his carrier

Malaka was a Senior Program officer of IUCN World Conservation Union and served as a relationship manager in Holcim– IUCN partnership program to rehabilitate Holcilm limestone mining quarry at Puttalam Sri Lanka

Malaka was an Environmental Consultant in ADB assisted Greater Colombo Waste water Management Project implemented by Colombo Municipal Council to establish two sea outfalls and 147Km. underground sewer network at the Colombo capital City of Sri Lanka. Malaka was the Waste water Treatment consultant in Waste water treatment plan belongs to Pepsi Cola Production plant at Riyadh Saudi Arabia

In year 2011, Malaka moved to New Zealand and worked in Environmental Science and Research Institute (ESR) in New Zealand as a Business/Policy analyst in Water group to analyzing drinking water standards New Zealand and made recommendations to Ministry of Health New Zealand to make ensure compliant their operations within the national compliance standards

In year 2010, Malaka moved to Irrigation sector and he was the Environmental Specialist in World Bank assisted Dam Safety and Waster Resource Planning project which was formulated to rehabilitate 64 major dams and irrigation reservoirs of Sri Lanka and Malaka worked for another 3 irrigation projects such as Climate Resilience Improvement project and Climate Reliance Multiphase Development project. Malaka carried out the Environmental Assessment process (EIA, IEE) and implementation of Environmental Management Plans (EMP) in these projects . Malaka worked for the Engineering consultants /Tractebel as an Environmental Consultant in Program Management, Design and Supervision Consultants of Mahaweli Water Security Investment program which is the largest Irrigation project in Sri Lanka for construction of TBM tunneling, canal and downstream development. Malaka took fully responsibility of Environmental approval and project implementation process with compliance with National and Asian Development Bank safeguards policies.

Aviation Environment is one of the sector Malaka worked and as a Director Environment Research and Project in Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, Malaka was the Country focal point for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme in International Aviation (CORSIA) Program.
