Employment

ATK /Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, Independence, MO 2/06 to Present

Machine Technician 40 hours a week

Performs mechanical adjustments and repairs to production equipment used in the manufacture of ammunition components. Removes, installs and adjusts punches, dies, eject stems, etc. by using various hand tools and manually tightening or loosening bolts which hold tooling in place. Makes precise adjustments for proper alignment of various punches, dies, cutting wheels, etc.

Produces and gages product and refines machine adjustments until proper specifications for length, concentricity, outside and point diameter, profile, boat tail, lead or charge depth, etc. are met. Insures foreign or damaged materials do not enter assigned operations by observing and removing from hoppers, feed tubes, transfers bars, etc. Empties catch pans of finished product into tote pans. Segregates and identifies, as required. Visually inspects and, using a variety of gages, measures completed product to insure manufacturing specifications are achieved.

May be required to push hand trucks, fill hoppers, etc. to keep machines supplied with materials. In some areas, as a result of fluctuating production schedules, tool setters may be required to take on the duties of a primer carrier and supply machines with primers; fill out buggy route sheet noting date, machine number, primer lot number, etc. or perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned by foreman. Identify and list production data such as quantities, pressures, alloys and operating conditions. Inspect, examine and observe for obvious product or equipment defects. Inspect, examine and observe for product or equipment defects not easily identified.

Count, make simple arithmetic additions and subtractions. Use measuring devices such as tapes, gauges, rules, weight scales, where reading is direct and obvious. Use measuring devices such as micrometers, calibrated steel tapes, calipers, etc. where precision and interpretation are required. Use non-power hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, etc. Determine malfunctioning of units by observing. Determine nature and location of malfunction. Perform repair and maintenance of equipment. Control activities of a single processing unit. Control activities of several processing units. Work as a member of a team.

Inspector Quality, Operations

Pick-up samples of solutions, components, cartridges, raw materials, and chemicals. Prepares samples for visual and gage inspections and testing. Records results and makes distribution to various areas making sure that all form/records are correct and samples are kept segregated when necessary.

Performs inspections and test in accordance with the appropriate approved Product Quality Inspection Plan, PCTS, SOP’s, Mil-Specs, drawings and Standard Practices to determine if product meets specifications. May operate equipment such as Tukon, Rockwell, milling, polishing wheel, simplex gauging machines, weigh scales, band saw, vacuum (leak test) and other associated equipment.

Annealing Equipment Operator

Operates gas or electric furnaces to anneal cartridge cases for subsequent operations by pushing buttons and levers, turning knobs, etc. to start, stop and control various parts of furnaces, trains, dryers, conveyors, etc. Follows detailed procedures in starting up or shutting down furnaces, dryers, pickling trains, etc. to avoid hazards and produce quality cases. Regulates flow of cases through furnaces to ensure proper anneal.

Maintains proper concentration of acid, soap, lubricant solutions and water for pickling, washing, neutralizing and lubricating baths in accordance with quality readings and visual examinations of case for smoothness, color, etc. Maintains supply of acid, soap, and lubricants. Shuts down units by following reverse of detailed procedure used for startup. Cleans train baths, tanks, and barrels by draining acid, soapy water, lube etc. and flushing with water. Maintains equipment and work area in a clean and safe condition. Obeys safety rules and regulations and wears proper safety equipment. Performs other associated and comparable duties as assigned.

NOTE: Washer, dryer and degreaser are not performed regularly, but only as needed

Blank Operator Production

Operate case pierce and priming machines, loading and assembly machines, powder charging machines, automatic presses, wash and rumble barrels, colt washers and lubricators, electric lift cart and two wheeled dollies. This would include, but not be limited to visually inspecting inside of primed cases for evidence of mouth waterproofing and varnish at the head of case and primer.

May repair or replace belts on priming machines, service various pots on priming machines, prepare and file perforated assembly plates, inspect filled plates visually to locate and replace items with defects, maintain powder chest, primed cases, on mezzanine floor and fill powder stacks and overhead hoppers with appropriate materials.

Operates several barrels simultaneously while adding cleaning and polishing agents to barrels by scooping, lifting or pouring and dumping, or shoveling into barrel, push hand truck down machine lines to collect discarded materials, move materials, supplies, and ammunition components, to the area as required. Performs manual labor in the unloading of incoming materials, maintains supply of various powder mixtures in charging cubicles and miscellaneous work supplies for charging bay operations, dispose of scrap and maintain good housekeeping.

Production Inspector/Cartridge Inspection

Inspects and hand feeds cartridges into automatic inspection machines. Removes cartridges from ammunition buggies by frequently stooping over to pick up rounds of ammunition from either standing or sitting position. Make a visual inspection adequacy of cannel ring, waterproofing, or primer positioning including inverted or cocked primers and any obvious surface defects which appear questionable and remove for additional inspection by others. Assure proper orientation of cartridge prior to placing rounds on elevated feed track.

Operate machine levers, in correct sequence, repeatedly to mechanically eject profile detect from machine chamber dies. Make a detail visual inspection of cartridges from gage and weigh inspection machine. Check ammunition, in seated position, for head groove cracks, clear identification rotating band seal, corrosion, dirty or discolored cartridges, case taper folds, etc. May use a mirror on the track to check additional projectile features as needed. Assist assigned area by supplying materials, ammunition components, rags, and clean clothing as required, insuring production rates are sustained. Insure integrity of lot numbers and disposition. Notify Area Manager of inventory status.

Ammunition Packing Operator

Manually packs ammunition into inner container and inner containers into outer containers. Move materials, supplies, ammunition components, finished ammunition etc. by hand truck to and/or from assigned area. May operate electric lift/cart and push two-wheeled dolly to load or unload materials. Prepares packing materials for use by sorting, cleaning, identifying, etc. Operate a bandoleer filling and stamping machines. Visually inspect and/or feed components, link clip, cartons and other packing materials into machine. Maintains equipment and work area in a clean and safe condition. Obeys safety rules and regulations and wears proper safety equipment. Performs other associated and comparable duties as assigned. Work under pressure.
