To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing this reference for my colleague, Victor Filiakin. I was introduced to Victor (electronically) about three years ago by a former student of mine, Erin Decker. She was visiting her parents in Hawaii prior to going to Moscow for an internship. I told her I was interested in forming a partnership with a teacher of English so we could organize an exchange of letters between our students. (I am a teacher of Russian in America.) I have tried to do this several times, usually with disappointing results. But with Victor, it was a resounding success.

Our students exchanged letters, drawings and photographs. With great interest my beginning Russian students explored the website of Victor’s school in Noginsk. It was comprehensible to them since Victor had posted English translations for most of the text. In fact I think he created the website. It was very advanced for a small suburban school, and much more interesting than my school’s website.

Victor and I also corresponded. I was interested to learn about his experiences in America. Likewise I shared with him recollections of my visits to Russia, especially my semester teaching English in Buryatia.

Last summer I spent a few days in Moscow, and had the pleasure of meeting Victor face to face. He and his mother were very kind and hospitable to me. They got up before dawn and traveled many hours from their home in Noginsk to meet me at Domodyedovo Airport. From there they escorted me to my hotel, which was even farther from where they live, with Victor taking charge of my over-sized American suitcase. We enjoyed a delightful snack of caviar and blini in my hotel room, and then they had to say “do svidaniya” to begin their long journey home.

Victor was a wonderful source of information and support throughout my time in Moscow. His computer research skills are phenomenal. I took photos of a small church I noticed on one of our excursions, and copied down the name from a sign. Within a few hours Victor was able to find all sorts of interesting facts about its history and architecture. Likewise he responded to my interest in the Moscow Metro, sending me a website with great photos and information.

Wherever we went in the city, he shared fascinating tidbits of history. I was thrilled, for instance, to learn that a certain theater was the home base of the great poet/musician Vysotsky. We were literally walking in his footsteps. Victor described the spontaneous outpouring of grief and respect that had occurred in that place when Vysotsky died.

Honestly I didn’t think I was especially interested in Moscow. My visit to the capital was kind of a footnote to my main destination—Buryatia. And my first “home” in Russia was Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) where I lived for six weeks as an undergraduate student. The relationship between the two major cities is a bit competitive, and people who love the “Venice of the North” tend to be unenthusiastic about Moscow. But now, thanks to Victor, I’ve had a change of heart. I know I barely scratched to surface of all that Moscow has to offer, and I’m eager to come back.

I have noticed that when bilingual people meet, they will naturally favor the language which facilitates easy communication. When I worked as a guest teacher of English in a Siberian village, most of my communication with my colleagues was in Russian. I only met one teacher there whose English was better than my Russian. With Victor, however, I speak English. Even though a fair amount of time has passed since his last visit to America, he has worked diligently to maintain and improve his English. I talk with him by Skype from time to time, so I can take a small amount of credit for his conversational skills.

Whatever kind of work Victor chooses to do in the future, I know that he will approach it with energy, creativity and integrity. He also has that essential quality, valued in all occupations: reliability. He can be trusted to be on time and to keep his word. He is an honorable man.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any additional information. My e-mail address is ad349d@r.postjobfree.com My phone number is 808-***-****.

Yours truly,

Priscilla MacGregor

Letter of Reference

To Whom It May Concern,

I highly recommend Viktor Filiakin services to native English speakers of all ages and business professionals. Viktor is pleasant, efficient, speedy and fun without sacrifice to quality of teaching service. Viktor has been an excellent online tutor due to his reliability, and degree qualifications. He has always answers his telephone to students, this is good for building confidence when learning new skills, continuity of interest levels and flow of study. Viktor offers students the flexibility to study at their own pace and accommodates suitable schedules for lesson contact. His experience and training allows him the flexibility to offer students tuition from the text of their choice, yet professional enough to offer a better choice where it may be required. Victor has great organisational skills and demonstrates an excellent understanding of integrating modern technology currently available to students, into his online tuition. Viktor is an excellent online tutor of Russian language to English speakers. Viktor understands sufficient English to really break-down aspects of the Russian language to help native English speakers understand the intricacies of the Russian language. Viktor always meets skype appointments on time. Building confidence through examples and strategies drawing from his past experience has the potential to expediate a students learning. Variety of teaching methods: Song lyrics, phonetics for pronunciation, cultural discussions and conversational practice and use of suitable online websites to name a few, made Viktor a very knowledgeable and fun tutor for studying another language.

On a personal note Victor has been a wonderful friend for several years and his assistance both before and during my visit to Russia as an Australian tourist back in August 2011

was invaluable! Viktor assisted my arrival at Sheremetyevo Airport, travel from the airport to Moscow and met with me in the Kremlin to make sure everything was safe and comfortable. After meeting Viktor as a penpal on the Masterrussian website back in 2008 we are becoming better friends every day. Viktor is a real gentleman and a very pleasant teacher and I was very happy to write this letter of reference for Viktor and wish him the very best!

Yours Sincerely,

Ms Gwen D. Macilai

Letter of Recommendation for Viktor Viktorovich Filiakin

To Whom it May Concern:

It is my pleasure to recommend Viktor Viktorovich Filiakin for any of your tutoring needs. He helped my granddaughter, Ekaterina, to overcome her fear of English (as foreign language), Russian and Maths, to feel confident passing major school and college tests and exams.

I learned of Victor’s tutoring service through a friend and I immediately contacted him to schedule some individual tutoring for Ekaterina. After three years, attending tutoring sessions two days a week for two hours each day, my granddaughter has made a huge improvement in study of different subjects. Her grade for English improved to the excellent mark, math and Russian improved by eighty five percent (good marks). Victor has provided Ekaterina with individual attention that helps her understand different subjects. He is very patient and knowledgeable in the subjects which he was tutoring Ekaterina. She is one of the best college students now.

Please call (in Russian) if you have any questions regarding Mr. Filiakin

Mr. Victor Filyakin

Flat 65, House 87, Soviet Street

Noginsk, Moscow Region

142400 Russia

August 23, 2004

Dear Mr. Filyakin

We got your letter dated July 15, 2004, a few days ago. We were very pleased to hear from you

and we have to tell you, your English is excellent — probably much better than ours. Our mother

tongue is German.

We are very proud that three of our newest technology machines went to Russia and are working

fine there, despite some small problems which are, however, being solved.

~ What we thought is that you might be the right man to do some translation work for us from English —

into Russian and/or the other way round, be it as an interpreter in certain discussions or as an

assistant for matters like the interface you mentioned. For the time being we would see this as an

additional job for you the same way you did work for the team in “OST-TARA”.

EMHART GLASS’ Vice-President for Sales, Mr. Carlo Mobayed, or our General Manager of

EMHART GLASS Neuss (Germany), Mr. Joachim Knauer, or Mr. Michael Funkler, the Sales

Manager for Russia, will contact you during one of their next trips to Moscow. They will keep me informed about the contacts to you.

Thank you again for writing to us.

Kind regards

Kurt Siegenthaler
