Developed new mattress-border making technology to reduce border manufacturing costs by 40%. Acquired office furniture business. CEO of corporation assigned me to go diagnose and fix perceived “purchasing problem.” Company manufactured office cubicle panels, which had chrome bars on three sides. They were missing deliveries to customers because of insufficient inventory of proper-size chrome bars on factory floor, despite the fact they had pallet after pallet of chrome bars. The problem was the inventory planning and procurement process used an invalid order-quantity/reorder point model. Designed and developed novel process and system to examine orders, compute the exact number and sizes of chrome bars needed for each delivery day’s needs, and then ordered the exact number of specific bars needed. Net result of six week project was lead times were reduced to 5 business days from 20 business days, and complete-and-on-time shipments zoomed to 99+% from 50%. New process also reduced raw material and WIP inventories by 75%, and reduced chroming vendors to one from three, with high COT performance by remaining vendor.
