Junior Counselors

WHO WE ARE

At JCC Camp we are more than just a Day Camp. We are a community made up of campers, families, and staff, all with the same desire— to give all kids a fun and safe place to explore, imagine and belong. JCC Camp provides engaging activities for our campers that spark their imaginations and inspire them to celebrate their individuality.

THE POSITION

Junior Counselors are responsible for the overall safety and supervision of campers, including their successful engagement in all aspects of the New Orleans JCC Summer Camp experience, including trips, programs, and aquatics. Junior Counselors take on an important role in assisting their co-counselors

(specifically the Head Teacher) in carrying out tasks related to camper experience and camp-day efficiency.

Junior Counselors report directly to the the Assistant Camp Director. WHAT YOU’LL DO

Camper Supervsion & Safety

● Along with your co-counselor(s), supervise 15-25 campers during all camp activities (Including campers with special needs)

● Be familiar with and enforce the personnel policies staff rules, and program of camp

● Assist Head Teacher (co-counselor) in keeping records as required, including documenting all incidents and behavioral issues.

● Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of all campers in any area or programs at camp.

● Model appropriate behavior to campers including on the bus to and from camp.

● Assist Head Teacher (co-counselor) in using use positive behavior-management techniques with campers.

● Perform any other program or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by Camper Experience & Camp-Day Efficiency

● Work with your co-counselor to provide the highest level of support and programming for your campers.

● Participate actively in all camp activities (including swim programming)

● Lead and/or assist in small and large group activities within your group

● Participate in camp-wide activities and programming (including performances, dress up days, and whole-camp programs)

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

Junior Counselor Candidates

● Be 16 years of age or older with a valid work permit

Or 15 years of age and entering 11th grade

All Summer Staff Candidates

● Willing to commit to 8 weeks of summer camp plus our Staff Training Week (See schedule below)

● Strong communication and problem solving skills

● Ability to remain calm and maintain perspective under pressure

● Commitment to work collaboratively with others

● Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing needs

● Must be enthusiastic and demonstrate and desire to go the extra mile SCHEDULE

● Summer Hours including paid staff training and direct service hours:

Staff Training Week: May 28, 2024 through May 31, 2024; 9AM - 4 PM

Camp Open House: May 31, 2024 4:30 PM - 6 PM

Camp: June 2, 2024 through August 2, 2024; 8 AM - 4 PM, Monday through Friday COMPENSATION

● Junior Staff Members are compensated based on experience. The range for this position is

$7.25/hr - $9/hr
