Objective and Profile

I am friendly, empathic, caring and attentive.

I am an organized, detail oriented, goal focused, and productive person. When faced with a challenge, I problem-solve to find a solution and I communicate effectively both orally and in written format.

I’ve spent my career listening to and observing clients’ life challenges, to identify changes that could bring different results, then coached them as they implemented and fine-tuned these to get more desired results.

I will be a great addition to your team because I care deeply about your patrons, and listen carefully to pick up clues from their attitude, posture and tone of voice, not just the words they say or don’t say.

B.S-Education

Experience

Christian Family Care hired me without even a resume. I met the President at a meeting, shared with her a little about my experience and interest and she told me to come in Monday to fill out the paper work. I spent the next six years there as a Marriage and Family Therapist from October 1988-November 1994.

Family Life Radio Counseling, Phoenix branch lured me away. I served as the establishing Director from November 1994-May 1997. I did everything from hire staff, to buy furniture and equip offices: lots of new things I’d never done before. Needing more family time, I stepped back to a therapist only position from 1997-2000.

Phoenix Christian Counseling Associates (PCCA) began the week after Family Life closed all its centers in 2000. The staff asked me to organize and lead a new center. I did many more new things: Secured US Treasury 501(c)3 tax designation and AZ Office of Behavioral Health Licensure clinic license; wrote a new Policy and Procedures Manual; oversaw day to day operations of the business; supervised interns and staff; and counseled many clients from October 2000-January 2012, when it closed.

Private practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist, working with individuals, couples and families from January 2012-December 2022.

Prior to 1988, I served as an executive assistant, then a homemaker with many PT jobs including radio announcer, radio program producer, and public speaker, therapeutic foster and adoptive parent, and Master’s degree student.

Leadership

Adult Sunday School

1992-2019, intermittently.

Mission trips to Guatemala

provided counseling services to resident missionaries 2004-2008.

Teen Bible Quizzing

Coached, then officiated quiz competitions 1994-2008.

Stephen Ministry

Taught church volunteers basic counseling skills to use with parishioners 1993-1995.

Key Skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, experienced radio announcer and public speaker; wrote policies and procedures manual.

Able to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively. Successfully organized, established and lead a non-profit organization.

Successfully accomplished things I had little to no training in, like securing 501 (c)3 tax designation from the IRS, and securing an AZ OBHL license at PCCA.

Passion and excitement for helping people and solving problems is reflected in 35 years of counseling; and incorporates compassionate interactions with both the general public and staff.

Competence to oversee day to day operations, supervise personnel and carry a personal counseling workload.

Able to recognize a need and take action to fill it. Lead an NPO to provide professional counseling services our community with a Christ follower philosophy.

Organized, detail-oriented, self-driven team player, who is a tenacious problem solver.

Joan Cook, M.C., L.M.F.T.
