Wasa scholar participating in labs amongst my peers, learning and doing research with several mentors, while also being a mentor myself. Exploits include tours around labs and interacting with technology, molecular biology labs, protein chemistry techniques, and instances of electrophoresis. As I am a part of this organization, I was required to do scientific research.

Laboratory Manager/ Mentor

Duties include:

Opening and shutting down the lab when necessary

Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings.

Assist in developing, improving, and trouble-shooting laboratory experiment and isolate, identify and prepare specimens for examinations.

Conduct research and assist in conducting of research, including the collection of information and samples

Conduct standardized biological, microbiological or biochemical tests and laboratory analyses to evaluate the quantity or quality of physical or chemical substances in bacteria

Coordinate with biology faculty, especially those involved in courses with multiple laboratory classes;

Function independently in the laboratory while preparing reagents, testing experiment, conducting trials to determine feasibility of modifications of procedures, and designing alternate procedures aimed at solving immediate problems, reducing costs, or making most efficient use of available resources;

Keep detailed logs of all work-related activities and identify, classify, label, store hazardous waste for disposal, maintain laboratory instruments and coordinate necessary procedures with associated personnel

Prepare cultures and handle bacteria samples, perform gel electrophoresis, prepare enzymes, perform DNA isolation, restriction, and transformation, and order and inventory laboratory equipment.
