Summary:

I am a motivated, tactical problem-solver, hardworking engineer and leader with a diverse base of tech experience. With more than 20 years of development experience in Python and Java, I pivoted seven years ago to specialize in DevOps automation and expertise in Terraform. I have always been focused on results and would love to make a huge impact for my team and organization.

My philosophy: Get it working (with POCs and security in mind), get it working right (meet all requirements), get it working fast!

Work Experience:

Cloud Architect / Senior Director Accenture Mar 2020 – Jan 2024

-I was selected to join the newly formed Accenture Amazon Business Group with the aim of deepening my knowledge and expertise in Terraform Enterprise, particularly within a cloud-centric environment.

-In each of these client engagements, I utilized Terraform modules to create and manage new cloud accounts resulting in secure, repeatable, reliable and efficient systems. I enjoyed collaborating with the client's architecture and security teams to ensure that the newly minted accounts incorporated best practices and adhered to all security requirements. In addition to reducing the audit footprint, complete automation also offered the ability to create a Disaster Recovery (DR) environment on demand. I managed a team of developers and successfully helped them develop the skills necessary for effective cloud architecture.

1.International Pharmaceutical: Collaborated with client’s engineers to incorporate their existing Terraform modules. This solution also included TFE (Enterprise) which would mint new AWS & GitHub accounts, new TFE Workspace and a new Hashicorp Vault branch - all based on a ServiceNow request.

2.F100 Financial firm: Integrated account creation with existing GitHub and Protegrity Encryption services. Business impact: reduced infrastructure by 60% and Cloud costs by 490k/year.

3.Leading Sports Apparel Company: Created a ‘waffle iron’ approach to creating new AWS and GitHub accounts. Integrated with in-house encryption and SSO services. The success and efficiencies of this project led to the staffing of 200+ additional FTEs.

-Created Accenture’s ‘Terraform Best Practices’ to help keep code consistent within our group.

-Helped built Accenture’s Center of Excellence (COE) in Terraform, Terraform Enterprise and infrastructure engineering.

-I served as a Technical Recruiter by conducted technical interviews to assess candidates' real-world experience and made recommendations on the top candidates.

-I developed a Python utility, ‘Terraform Module Importer’ to bring existing cloud resources under the management of Terraform in an automated manor. This saved the client months of manual import mapping via Excel. I later ported this app to GoLang and it has proved to be useful for multiple clients.

-I enjoyed training and mentoring colleagues within positive and inclusive environment to retain talent and build high-performance teams to contribute to our overall success. Transferable skills in TF systems design was a priority.

-Assisted various teams to safely migrate enterprise data to cloud-based production databases.

-Vendor Relationships: As part of leadership, I served an active role in evaluating and selecting third party services and products. I became a trusted advisor and was able to help in separating the hype from reality. Posing the right questions during the sales pitch and subsequent demos was critical.

-I helped to implement standards in terms of software engineering, software architecture as well as encouraging the usage of automated tests after each build.

-I have built several POCs integrating various Artificial Intelligence (AI) models within Python, including ChatGPT 4 and LLAMA models.

Cloud Architect / Director Platform Infrastructure Engineering

ZipCar Acquisition by Avis/Budget Dec 2016 – Sep 2020

-Represented Avis IT in merging the ‘Connected Car Framework’ (CCF) with ZipCar’s evolving CI/CD system. The end result of this collaboration was a state-of-the-art, scalable build system.

-Contributed to the new GitOps CICD system by integrating Make to build and run any language or script, and the AWS Parameter Store to manage a hierarchy of configuration data across multiple domains and environments. By collaborating with a skilled team of engineers inspired me to shift my career focus toward DevOps.

-Leveraged GitOps to create ephemeral development environments upon branch creation, allowing developers to have a separate environment for each of their branches. This innovation led to an estimated savings of 80-90k in the first 4 months by reducing dependencies on Operations.

-Began using Terraform in the AWS cloud to define the infrastructure needed for CCF. As a diverse group, Terraform allowed us to improve efficiency and work together as a single IoT team.

-One of the obstacles/challenges with the merging of companies and tech was that at first as both parties were trying to promote their own systems. We checked our egos at the door, listened to each other, kept an open mind and finally presented management with a well-designed, collaborative system design. This system architecture was fully approved for implementation.

-I installed and configured the many necessary services to support our new initiatives such as Jenkins, BitBucket, Artifactory, ActiveMQ brokers and the Prometheus/Grafana/Loki trio. Often, a POC was necessary in order to introduce new technologies to the IT teams. I also encouraged our team to practice Agile development and Scrum ceremonies.

Java Services Developer (Contractor) Avis Rent-A-Car Sep 2001 – Dec 2016

-In 2016, the CTO selected me to architect and ‘own’ the ‘Connected Car Framework’ as the company's first application to run in AWS. This was designed around Kafka giving Avis their first event-driven service. Leveraged IBM DataPower to distribute traffic to AWS vs. datacenter as needed. CCF was named ‘Project of the Year’ and was estimated to have increased rental revenue by 35-40% and customer satisfaction increased by 34%.

-Created a ‘Robotics Pricing’ application that would import millions of competitor rates for various rental locations and dates, index this data and output suggested rate changes based on a set of predefined rules. This led to a 32% increase in rental profits within the first 4 months.

-Provided a migration path to the community-based SpringBoot framework, simplifying the hiring process for SpringBoot developers.

-Developed the Avis Services Framework (ASF) to simplify the codebase of a diverse set of Java based service and microservices across the company. ASF had the ability to handle the collection of metrics, in/outbound communications, authentication, authorization, protocol conversions, validation, and logging of all service requests.

-As I had demonstrated a good track record in terms of data protection, I became responsible for the systems design and ongoing support of a new Java-based Encryption library with approved implementations of PBKDF2, AES-256, various hashing and masking algorithms and became the mandatory standard at Avis. The major impact here was that this library greatly simplifying future audits.

-Collaborated with InfoSec and implement a Java-based AES-256 Rijndael algorithm at both ends, significantly enhancing data security. Huge Impact: Prevented developers from writing their own encryption routines!

-Through a comprehensive set of use cases, I created the ‘Direct Connect’ service by leveraging the mainframe TCP service and implemented several of the initial OTA specs providing partner access to dozens of airlines, hotels and travel agencies. This new channel increased the number of business partners by a factor of 12.

-For partners unable to implement services, I created the ‘DCWeb’ webapp so that partners could have access to pricing information by embedding our reservation engine into their existing web sites. My team also supported customers with prewritten java script snippets.

-Developed an end-to-end encrypted Java-based TCP service to communicate with all mainframe 'screens', paving the path for Avis to create hundreds of new 'off-mainframe' services. Over the first couple of years, Avis saved 200-300k of CPU cycles.

-Worked directly with the Open Travel Alliance (OTA) in 2002 to help form a new XML set of standards for travel companies to exchange data.

-Began as a Java Services Developer, progressing through the ranks due to demonstrated technical expertise and leadership.

MarchFirst/USWeb/Primordial:

-In the earlier days of the web, I implemented several high-profile projects based on Microsoft ASP, including creating an initial storefront for Anchor Real Estate, an e-commerce backend for Saks Fifth Avenue, Coca-Cola’s Intranet and created initial webstores for The Franklin Mint and Carrier Air-Conditioning.
