DONALD SHOWMAKER

The bulk of my experience has been in the manufacturing sector as a maintenance machinist. Although I was recruited by ATS for a position of being a traveling machinist, my vast knowledge of repair parts and processes and organization of warehouse operations, quickly moved me into a role of warehousing management. I travelled the country to multiple paper, gypsum and plywood mills as a contractor to GP. At each GP mill, I was tasked with conducting an initial inventory of all repair parts and machinery in the storeroom/warehouse. Upon completion and verification, I reported my findings to the mill operations manager. I would then identify and arrange disposal of obsolete inventory. I set min/max limits on inventory after researching history in the MP2 system that GP used at that time. I coordinated with the maintenance planner to ensure that necessary specialty items would be on-site before job start date. After ATS lost the GP maintenance contract, I traveled to other manufacturing locations such as WestRock and Caterpillar but the need for my services was no longer in demand as they had been with GP. Due to the fact that I had been promoted to a salary position of Sr Inventoty Analyst, I was not allowed to return to my original position as a traveling machinist. After a 7 week lay-off, I was fired 1 week before becoming eligible for a separation package. I returned to San Antonio, TX where I had established my residency. I was offered a job at Morrison Supply in the warehouse as a receiving lead where I am currently employed. Delivery Staging

Machinery Repairman

10/1986 - 04/1991

Upon completion of basic training, I was assigned to Machinist “A” school. After graduating, I chose to go to Groton, Ct submarine base in order to continue my training at one of the Navy's premier precision machine shop. I completed my 18 month obligation at NSSF Groton, and chose to join the US Navy Seabees as a maintenance machinist for the rest of my enlistment. I was assigned to NMCB7 in Gulfport, MS and immediately deployed to Puerto Rico. Being a maintenance machinist for a battalion is very different from what I had been doing in Groton. I no longer had a shop full of machines and materials and support from other experienced machinist. I was s add line with a small shop that I pulled to various job sites in a 2-1/2 ton truck. I learned to field sketch the required parts needed for a project, returned to my shop and manufactured parts by using the limited resources available to me. Hurricane Hugo struck the island just before we were to return to the US. Our role then changed from Base support to emergency cleanup and support for the residents of Puerto Rico. I was tasked with corpse removal and security detail during the cleanup effort. My return to Gulfport was short lived. I volunteered to join a battalion detachment to Adak,Alaska. On 02 August 1990, Sadaam invaded Kuwait. Our battalion was reassigned to Desert Shield. Due to my enlistment coming to an end, I extended for an additional 6 months so that I could stay with our battalion as we went to the Middle East. We did not see combat and returned to the US when we were relieved by another battalion just before the beginning of Desert Storm. Upon returning to Gulfport, I completed my extended enlistment and separated from the Navy with an honor discharge.
