Virginia Department of Transportation 2016-2021

Safety Program Coordinator

Provided safety leadership and support to Central Office and nine districts in an organization of over 7,500 employees.

Supported safety and health programs statewide. Revised safety and health directives to reflect current regulatory requirements and agency experience. Supported District Safety Managers as questions, issues or needs arose in their district. Developed training programs focused on special emphasis topics. Participated on the District Safety Managers Working Group. Coordinated and supported annual EPCRA Tier Two reporting for the agency.

Managed databases that collected information on statewide injuries/illnesses, motor vehicle crashes and motor vehicle incidents. Designed and produced a monthly safety report with key occupational safety metrics. Analyzed data and provided guidance to the districts on injury/illness and crash prevention opportunities. Completed safety portion of the annual Executive Order 109 (Workplace Safety and Employee Health) report.

Reviewed and approved/disapproved all new product requests with safety implications made to the agency’s internal supply services program. Managed statewide selection of personal protective equipment and safety equipment. Authored/revised specifications for safety equipment.

Led safety efforts at the agency’s Central Office: provided leadership and facilitation to the safety committee, developed communications on relevant safety topics, provided ergonomics support to employees, reviewed and implemented as appropriate safety ideas submitted by employees, organized an annual Central Office Safety Day, and supported special events.

Guided and supported safety strategies for two business units, totaling eleven sites in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and more than 3,500 employees.

Implemented a comprehensive safety management system across sites that increased regulatory compliance as well as improved performance with incident prevention topics that went beyond compliance such as job hazard analysis and off the job safety.
