Negotiated and closed $15mm acquisition of natural gas gathering/processing and NGL fractionation, storage, transportation, and marketing businesses from Enron's MLP EOTT. Drove EBITDA from $1.5mm to $12mm during first five years through improving operational efficiency, expanding customer base, and implementing new organic growth initiatives through expanding operations, reducing cost of sales, and decreasing operating expenses. Managed project development and construction of $200mm butane isomerization facility, including its commercial development, permitting, engineering, construction, and commissioning. Directed Inergy's US NGL/LP transportation business consisting of 225 truck/trailers and 250 employees. Grew EBITDA 30% to $8mm. Expanded West Coast operations from two states to six, increased revenue per unit hauled 23%, and improved operational efficiencies through reducing cost of sales and operating expenses.

AQUILA, INC., Kansas City, MO. 1991 – 2003

P&L responsibility for Aquila’s regulated gas and electric utilities “wires and pipes” operations in seven states, with 2,000 employees, $136mm annual operating expense, $139mm annual capital expenditures, and $138mm EBIT. Oversaw operations through eight direct reports (Vice Presidents, Managers and Directors).

Streamlined domestic field organization, consolidated two organizations into single entity, reduced costs 15%, enhanced customer service, and increased productivity, all while maintaining and enhancing quality of service.

Explored, developed, and executed several initiatives involving growth, acquisitions, and divestures. Led integration of newly acquired 2.3mm customer/3,600-employee international electric utility. Solicited, negotiated, and closed sale of Aquila’s $75mm intrastate natural gas pipeline. Grew UtiliCorp Pipeline’s annual throughput 20%, asset base 10%, revenues 35%, and EBIT 45% while reducing operating costs, negotiating lower-cost service contracts, and implementing higher fees to customers via PUC rate increases. Negotiated multi-year, multi-million-dollar transportation and service contracts with large utilities, commercial entities and the federal government. Lead team in the development and implementation of regulatory strategy for “unbundling” Aquila’s electric transmission system from its vertically integrated electric utility divisions, merging Aquila’s transmission assets/operations with regional independent operators.
