Mathematics. Each time I feel a breeze, vector fields flood my mind. Each wave in the ocean, I
see a sea of moving arrows, changing direction. Each car that goes by, each bird flapping its
wings, erosion of mountains over time; I imagine its speed, direction, and rates of change over
time. I spend each day thinking about differential equations and how each movement we see can
be mapped through an equation.
Computer Science. I see the world not just as TRUE/FALSE, but as a gradient of
understanding, of potential, of seeing. Most importantly, of imagination. I apply statistics,
randomization, probability distributions. I imagine the world as a web of Monte Carlo
simulations, with each input defined with a distribution feeding into an output that cycles back
around with its own distribution. I imagine a virtual environment which all these images and
statistics can come together down to the finest detail, mapped down to the atomic/chemical
structure.
Psychology and Philosophy. Every day, I make observations of the world. I compare my
personal experiences to those of my peers. I analyze personality traits. I learn behavior of every
person I come in contact with. I read their body language, seeing through the words they speak to
understand if something seen or heard is bothersome. I listen to their speeches, analyzing the
definitions they use to support their vocabulary. Understanding psychology has helped me to see
a similarity to all people and to embrace each difference that occurs. It taught me to see beauty in
the randomness, yet sameness, of human nature.
Photography and Editing. Each image I take, I think of proportion. I think of depth. I think of
the space in the image, the ratios of the settings on my camera, new angles to try seeing the
image. I think of the movement, the direction of the lines, the way something follows through the
image. I edit the photos, adjust levels and think about how each color works in relation to
another. I see exposure and contrast and adjust curves to change shadows and highlights. I create
anew world defined by my vision.
Imagination and Visualization. Every time I create a world in my mind starting with a blank
canvas. I imagine a flat surface, a mountain rises, trees and plants grow from the ground, birds
move by, currents flow. I imagine this in grids, then apply detail. I see the curvature of each
surface. I think of topology, of cross-sections and projections; and how it works together to
create a structure.
Foreign Language. I love seeing the connections between words. Seeing the roots of words,
breaking them into pieces. Making understanding of the language before I even know what the
word means. I like how the language influences people, how it makes people feel, how it
changes their actions and reactions.
Travel. I’ve seen people from different cultures, formations in different countries, the direction
and position of the moon and sun. I think about my position in the world, how far or close I am
to certain structures. I look at maps and begin to think of the way the earth turns, the way
satellites rotate around the earth, and how the universe moves and breathes. I think about culture,
how people interact with one another and understand their place in the world.
