career summary & Objective
Hit the ground running, learning everything about civil litigation and criminal defense. Opened my own successful law practice in Los Angeles; represented over a thousand clients; handled thousands of files. Objective: To utilize my skills and experience from years as a legal assistant, paralegal, litigator, trial attorney and appellate attorney, in any non-attorney capacity needed by my employer so that his/her clients feel secure and happy with their representation.
Employment
THE MARINA LAW CENTER/SELF December, 1997- January, 2013 Legal Research and Writing Los Angeles, California 90066
Took on freelance research and writing assignments from many attorneys in Los Angeles, California. Law and Motion and Appellate work, mostly, but with just about everything in between. Research intensive. Often the lawyers who sought me out did not have a specific idea or task, but rather, asked me to review a particular client file and devise a litigation or post litigation strategy. This business grew quickly. Have continued to do the same independently since moving home to Virginia in 2003.
THE LAW OFFICES OF TIMOTHY B. KNIGHT August, 1988- February, 1997
General Civil Litigation (PI) Los Angeles, California 90066
What began as a solo endeavor soon grew into a four attorney practice with over a thousand cases and a full support staff. I went from being responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of a small office in West Los Angeles to the owner of a litigation intensive civil law firm. While we had our share of “bread and butter” personal injury cases, we had more than our share of complex and interesting tort cases ranging from racial discrimination against Coca Cola to elder abuse to blatant medical malpractice by doctors and staff at a County trauma center that eventually was shuttered.
LAW OFFICE OF TORRES & BRENNER APRIL, 1988- JULY, 1988
Civil and Criminal Defense Pasadena, California 91101
Medical Malpractice Defense, personal injury, professional liability, civil and criminal trials, property damage, insurance coverage and bad faith, computer law, public and private entity liability and civil rights. Anita Brenner is brilliant and was a mentor.
PARALEGAL/LEGAL ASSISTANT/ATTORNEY AUGUST, 1986- APRIL, 1988
Law Offices of Jon Riley Pasadena, California 91101
Was given full responsibility over an alphabetical “chunk” of this law offices’ files. Handled client intake, file set up, discovery, client contact, litigation support, settlement, local court rules, procedure and everything associated with each assigned client and their respective file. 100% “motorcycle law” all over California. Settlement intensive and a “gold mine” for Mr. Riley.
LOS ANGELES COUNTY PUBLIC DEFENDER AUGUST, 1985- AUGUST, 1986
Recruited, hired and relocated from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles as an intern/prospective attorney in the office of the Public Defender for the County of Los Angeles. Very intensive criminal defense training including case handling and case law review. Literally “thrown” into misdemeanor trials (intakes, arraignments, case work up, pleas, trials) the very first day. There is no better training ground for a trial lawyer anywhere.
