LETTER FROM THE CEO Safety Handbook
Dear Dollar General Employee:
At Dollar General, our mission is to help our customers achieve a better life, provide our shareholders a superior return and give our employees respect and opportunity. Because you help bring our mission to life through the work you do at Dollar General, we want you to be safe and secure at work so that you can enjoy the fun and friendly environment we strive to offer our customers. In our industry, injury prevention can be challenging, but, because of your focus on working safely, we are making great improvements in reducing injuries at Dollar General. I know that we can do even better, and I look forward to the time when we have no Dollar General employees injured on the job. The “Store Employee Safety Handbook,” the training program you are about to review, is a tool that has been developed to take safety awareness and working safely to the next level. An injury-free workplace is possible but depends on your active and dedicated involvement each and every day. Many of the things you will learn through this training program, such as the importance of daily stretching and proper lifting techniques, can be applied outside of work as well. I hope that you find this information helpful and that you enjoy a fulfilling and injury-free work experience with Dollar General. Thank you for your commitment to safety.
Sincerely,
Todd Vasos
CEO, Dollar General

Do you know how to access the SOP on STOREnet?
If you do not know, ask the Store Manager.
1A: Standard Operating Procedures Manual
Your store should have posted a Safety and Stocking poster as shown in 1B. For safety reasons, it is
important for employees to review and understand
all posted safety-related material.
Where is the Safety and Stocking poster located in your store?
Where is the Safety Information Center on the Safety and Stocking poster?
1B: Safety Information Center

Manager (or manager on duty, as delegated by the
Store Manager) to have corrected. You have the right to report any safety hazard without fear of retaliation. You may also report hazards by calling the Employee Response Center (ERC) at 1-888-***-****, option 1. What is wrong with the picture in 2A?
2A: Is this a potential safety hazard?
If injured during the course of work, you must

(or manager on duty, as delegated by the Store
Manager) and the 24-hour Incident Reporting

EMERGENCY RESPONSE
The primary goal of our emergency plan is to ensure the safety of employees and customers in our stores. Each store has emergency response information
detailed on the Safety Information Center as shown in 3A. This information outlines safety procedures and responsibilities, and provides education.
3A: Emergency Response Information
Become familiar with what to do in an emergency by learning and practicing procedures for fire, severe weather, earthquake, or any other emergency. Learn and practice all of your store’s escape routes and understand the procedures on the Safety Information Center shown in 3B.
Where is the location to gather outside in case of a need to evacuate your store?
3B: Emergency Evacuation Plan
During an emergency, determine if evacuation is
necessary. Know where all fire extinguishers are
located for first responders. During severe weather, stay calm, and seek safe shelter in ground level
hallways and interior rooms away from windows and
possible falling objects. In an earthquake, seek
shelter inside under a sturdy desk, table, inner
doorway, or in a corner of a room.
3C: During severe weather seek safe shelter

HAZARD COMMUNICATION Safety Handbook
All store employees work with or around hazardous
materials to some degree. Examples of products
considered to be hazardous materials include
cleaning products, cosmetics, motor oil, and charcoal lighter fluid. All products considered hazardous must be properly labeled. See 4A. For instance, if you pour a cleaning solution into an unlabeled container, you must clearly label the new container with its new
contents. Information regarding what to do in case of injury or illness from a hazardous material is available from a safety data sheet (SDS).
4A: The cleaning product to the left is not labeled At Dollar General, SDS information is immediately
available by calling 1-877-***-****. See 4B.
The information will be faxed, mailed, or verbally reviewed by the 24-Hour SDS Information Hotline
immediately upon request.
4B: SDS Information
Specific information regarding the OSHA Hazard
Communication standard can be found on the Safety
Information Center. See 4C.

HOUSEKEEPING Safety Handbook
During operating hours, do not leave rolltainers,
u-boats, or ladders unattended. Maintain aisles free of debris and any other slip or trip hazards at all times. See 6A.
6A: A properly maintained aisle
After use, secure ladders in designated storage space as shown in 6B. This ensures that the ladder will not fall if bumped or knocked loose.
6B: A properly stored ladder
Sweep and mop floors regularly, as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manual. Use
the store’s hand held device to acknowledge that the store is free of hazards during the daily scheduled visual Safety Checks. The Safety Checks are in
addition to continually checking the store for hazards throughout the day and during recovery. The Safety Check is a visual inspection of the entire store,
checking to ensure there are no blocked or
obstructed exits, electrical panels, fire extinguishers, or aisle ways. The store team should also use this time to look for trip hazards or spilled substances on the floor such as liquids or merchandise.
Report and correct any unsafe conditions or hazards immediately to the Store Manager (or manager on
duty, as delegated by the Store Manager). Use the
“Caution Wet Floor” signs to guard unsafe areas until the hazard can be corrected.

ROLLTAINERS
Dollar General stores receive merchandise via
rolltainers. Rolltainers are wheeled portable
containers manufactured of aluminum. They provide
a safe and effective method of supplying boxed
merchandise from the distribution centers.
Always review the condition of a rolltainer prior to use. See 11A. If a rolltainer is in need of repair or is in an unsafe condition, tag the rolltainer with a
Rolltainer Repair Tag. Rolltainer Repair tags can be found on the Damaged Rolltainer Repair Tag Program section of the Safety and Stocking poster in the
receiving room.
11A: Damaged Rolltainer Repair Tag Program
Never ride on or stand on or in a rolltainer. Always push the rolltainer from the end with the pivot
wheels. Do not pull. When moving a rolltainer, ensure your hands are placed on the inside bars and never on the outside. See 11B.
Receiving Rolltainers on truck day:
Dollar General employees are to handle rolltainers only when the vendor delivery driver pushes the
rolltainer past the receiving room or front door
threshold.
11B: Hands need to be on the inside bars
Do not leave rolltainers unattended during operating hours. See 11C.
Rolltainer Toppers
Rolltainer toppers are merchandise placed on the top of the rolltainers when the trailer is loaded at the
distribution center. When the trailer arrives at your store, the truck driver will remove all toppers from the
rolltainer and place on u-boats. If merchandise is stacked above the top of the rolltainer or leaning against the net, use a step stool or ladder to safely remove the
merchandise prior to moving onto the sales floor or unhooking the net. Be aware of fellow employees and customers while moving rolltainers out of the receiving room and onto the sales floor.
