EDUCATION

BA English, Hanover College, Hanover IN

MS Special Education, Indiana State University, Terre Haute IN Ph.D.. Special Education, University of Kansas, in progress Specialization: Strengths Based & Inclusive Approaches to the Education of Learners with Extensive & Pervasive Support Needs

Secondary Areas of Interest: Supporting Students with Intensive Interventions Needs in Tiered Systems and Blending of Early Childhood & Early Childhood Special Education EXPERIENCE

I have taught at all grade levels, Pre-K through age 22. I have taught SLD students, ED students, students with Autism, CI-Mild students, CI-Moderate students, CI-Severe students, DD students, and OHI students. I have taught in all settings, from self contained to resource to full inclusion. I have also done community based instruction. I have taught inside a residential treatment center for students with emotional disorders and mental heath diagnoses. I have taught night classes at the college level. I have served students on home bound and been a Title I tutor at residential group homes and inside Lutherwood. I have tutored for GED, GQE, ECA, ISTEP and ILEARN. I have taught summer remediation classes. I am Highly Qualified in Reading, English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Health. I am familiar with Indiana IIEP, and Google Classroom. I have also taught virtual education at every grade level. One thing that makes me unique is that I actually prefer to work with ED students and students with behavioral problems. It is my favorite area of Special Education. My experience inside the residential treatment center was priceless. It enabled me to work on a treatment team with their professionals and learn many new things about emotional disabilities, emotional disorders, and the mental health component. If I had my choice, I would work exclusively with such students. It is my area of passion in Special Education. I am accustomed to working with many team players. I have tested students as an Educational Diagnostician as well as done informal testing to determine where their strengths and weaknesses are. I have geared instruction to best meet their needs. I have Orton- Gillingham training. I have also been trained in CPI and therapeutic holds, and learned many deescalation techniques. I believe in project based learning and service learning opportunities. I also believe in developing vocational skills for Life Skills students and students with Autism or OHI, as well as for students who need to learn a trade to transition into the work force. I have developed a Social Skills Program to help students learn to be compassionate, manage their own behavior, and manage their emotions. Regardless of whether it occurs in the classroom or in the work place, social / emotional skills are important. Behavior must be under control so learning can occur. We should all be life long learners. I have also been a CASA Director. I have a long history of working with students of all ages who take medication and I do understand how medication can affect their cognitive abilities. I have been trained in conflict resolution and passed that along to students I work with.
