Employed as the Teacher of Record for High School stu- dents with severe and profound disabilities including Autism, Downs Syndrome, non verbal and other cognitive and physical disabilities that required the student to be in a self contained classroom as being mainstreamed was not possible. Students were taught life skills and academic curriculum as Individual Educational Plans were developed based on their level of func- tioning and capability to include accommodations that pro- tected their rights under ADA Legislation. Case Management duties primarily included the legal protection and rights of the students/families assigned to the case load as well as protect- ed the district from legal action being taken if these rights were violated or not followed properly. Special Education students/ families are protected under FERPA (Family Educational Rights Rights and Privacy Act) in compliance with the State of Texas Legislation as well as entitled to Legal Rights Under FAPE (Free and Appropriate Public Education) which included developing and adhering to their IEP and accommodations in the classroom and on the state developed alternative STAAR which is part of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act). Case Management man- dates annually the ARD be reassessed and a new PLAPH rede- veloped for the next academic year as well as presenting the students present levels of achievement and progress monitoring through adequate and extensive accurate data collection to support documentation that also includes Behavioral Interven- tion Plans, Crisis Plans and Public Law (P.L) 94-142 before the ARD Committee which is a diverse campus committee that ap- proaches different departments of the campus/district as many of the special education students need extra support with the social emotional services provided as well. As a Special Educa- tion Teacher and a Case Manager it is expected that Crisis Pre- vention Intervention be utilized when necessary for the stu- dent’s as well as their peer’s, faculty and staff safety and benefit to be familiar with Analytical Behavior Analysis as the common Approaches of discipline in a general Education Setting is not the same as the Student with special needs especially Autism and the students that are diagnosed Emotionally Disturbed.
