For the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) / Land Border Integration (LBI) project, helped create the Appian BPM tools used to track construction and installation of the sites. Administered the Red Hat 5.2 servers that host Appian, and administered the Appian suite. Specified the servers and hardware that implemented the first pass of the WHTI infrastructure, and was SSO for the CTLF server installation. Helped create the VPIM software for the lane security computers, developed LDAP Apache 2.2 routines and mod_perl and PHP extensions that access z/OS CA Top Secret LDAP on the LSCs. Currently senior staff in the Operations and Maintenance section that maintains the ~480 WHTI sites, performing root cause analysis of failures and configuration control and extension of the O&M tools. Utilize Remedy and Tivoli in handling tickets and patches. Setup the Bugzilla bugtracking system; implemented and admin a SFTP server under IIS on Windows 2008 Enterprise server. Created and distributed common setups under FileZilla for accessing that site across the several corporate partners in WHTI / LBI. Designed and implemented an Operations and Maintenance Standard Setup under SharePoint. This distributed collaborative document and tool store supports COO and contains Wikis for short HowTos, the patches to be applied, and the documentation, procedures and tools that aid O&M personnel in installing and maintaining the WHTI system. Designed and created a Data Acquisition System for a Chemical Safety Board investigation using LabVIEW 8.1 and created custom electronic circuitry to acquire pressures, temperature and flow. Specified and ordered sensors. Utilized TightVNC to display the DAS procedure real-time for lawyers and professional witnesses. Designed and created a Coal Miner Tracking system using an ARMv5TE processor running Debian Linux. Interfaced 3-axis inertial tracker, RFID reader and Pressure/Temperature module with C in a Scratchbox cross-compilation environment, using NFS shares on a Debian Linux platform under VMWare on a Windows XP host. Conceived an innovative use of ceiling-attached RFID tags to recalibrate the inertial tracker within the mine. Analysis of results via MATLAB 8.1 and Excel. Designed new enclosures and modified existing PIC C code for an in-cave data acquisition system. Produced multiple proposals and sales presentations; certified for underground coal mine R&D work.

For NASA, helped architect and design the infrastructure for a distributed spacecraft simulation environment. Created the collaborative web site for the REATSS project, specifying and implementing the TikiWiki Content Management System, Subversion Source code control and BugZilla issue tracking. Specified, ordered and built the REATSS Proof of Concept Server hardware. This implemented both rack and blade 8-way Opteron servers under Debian Linux Testing and Windows 64-bit Enterprise Server 2003 servers. Implemented hardening, firewall and backup for these systems. These systems tie to a 3 Terabyte SAN, which I also specified and integrated. Created custom, distributed models for tracking Space Trash and RF / Optical link modeling. Produced both internal and external reports, studies and analyses.

Designed, developed and implemented a RFID tag inspection system. Two US Patents (USPTO 7,561,022 and 7,420,457) were awarded for a method developed for testing individual RFID tags. This method implements real-time interrogation and inspection of single RFID tags, interfacing to MySQL and Access databases. The method and hardware / software developed is currently in use at Perdue Pharma for OxyContin / FDA traceability and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals for Viagra / FDA traceability.

Created an architecture for a land-based data warehouse for US Navy battlegroup system and ship's status data. This system used local distributed sensors within a destroyer or cruiser, and transferred that information to an aircraft carrier, which would further feed that information to a land-based data repository for further analysis. Ultra Wide Band communications were used between ships; a given ship's captain can see the historical data for their vessel. Became familiar with the Aegis Combat System and typical IT architecture of current naval vessels. This was a prototype and test probe for the systems to be incorporated with the DDX; further work delayed by 9/11.
