Medical Assistant:

Cardiology

Family Medicine

Orthopedic

I am currently a Certified Medical Assistant at Marshall Orthopedic. I have worked in three medical offices with Marshall Health. I began at Marshall Cardiology in the Coumadin Clinic, working with Dr. Ralph Stevens, where I would check a patient’s level of Coumadin and adjust if necessary. Marshall Cardiology also has a home testing program where the patient does a home finger stick with a home machine. We are notified by the company as to the patient’s result. We also instruct the patient of health care and dietary needs as well as instruction of Lovenox/Enoxaparin, a blood thinner injection that most patients who are on Coumadin need prior to and post-surgery.

From Marshall Cardiology, I transferred to Marshall Family Medicine, where I worked with Dr. Adrienne Mays-Kingston. My duties were performing multiple injections from newborn child shots to yearly flu shots and any other necessary injections a patient may need. Checking vitals upon arrival of the patient, from manual blood pressures, temperatures, manual pulse, medication reconciliations on every patient as well as current visit information. If the patient has seen a provider outside of our facility, getting a Release of Information signed and fax to the facility for the patient’s records for the primary care physician to review and then scanned into the patient’s chart chart for physician to review. I printed faxes for my physician that had been faxed for the physician to sign and then faxed back to the facility that has requested the signature. In our office, we are also responsible for yearly Medicare exams, where eye exams, hearing exams and at times pulmonary function testing were needed. Calling or E-scripting medications for patients as requested. Assisting in yearly exams for men, women & children, scheduled referrals for outside testing or to other specialists and doing precertification’s for medications, referrals, outpatient testing or procedures.

From Family Medicine, I transferred to Marshall Orthopedics, working with multiple physicians there from Podiatry, Upper & Lower Extremity as well as Trauma and Walk-In Clinic, I have assisted in minor office procedures of nail removal, ingrown nails, foot ulcers and general foot care, cast removal, wound care, wound & dressing changes, suture/staple removal, splinting, assisting in joint injections as well as setting up surgeries

for patients. I am currently one of two nurses for Dr. Matthew Bullock, hip/knee surgeon I have since returned to Family Medicine to work with Dr. Adrienne Mays-Kingston and continue doing the previous job as I previously did but while attending courses at Ohio University – Southern, I developed a handout for patients with fall risks/concerns. This handout will be given to patients who, while in patient intake, have had a recent fall. This hand out gives information on what to discuss with your physician since you have had the recent fall, like discussing medications that may cause dizziness or lightheadedness, trip hazards to look for in their home as well as scheduling eye exams or an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss possible ill-fitting shoes or foot problems that may cause falls.

Currently, I am working in Marshall Orthopedics with Matthew Bullock, DO, He is a hip/knee surgeon. I am his surgery scheduler for St Mary’s Medical Center and Three Gables Surgery Center. I get all the records together and send them to an outside facility, HIMG, where they will contact the patient and schedule a preoperative clearance visit with Dr. Barringer. Once the patient has been seen, I will get all the records ready for the patient’s surgery. I also discuss a joint video with each patient to make sure that they have a clear. understanding of the surgery and all it entails prior to the surgery. I also work in the clinic with Dr. Bullock, we pull injections, clean the injection site, we also assist in drawing fluid to be sent off for testing to rule out any type of infection in the patient’s joint. I send prescriptions, outpatient referrals for physical therapy, lymphedema clinic, or any other type of referral that may be needed. I do post operative calls making sure the patient is following surgery protocol as well as checking to make sure there are no post operative problems. I do FMLA, any disability forms that the patient may need filled out prior to or during the recouperation period.
