•Mentored welfare-dependent citizens some with disabilities, others under employed on job skills development and economic issues through the Escambia County Community Service Program and the Escambia County Community Service Non-Custodial Parent Program.

•Volunteered for two years with The National Corporation for Community Service as a Vista Team Leader in Florida and Georgia—coordinated Vistas in Atlanta, Georgia, for Action Ministries, and supervised seven people throughout Georgia. Action Ministries assist families with housing, the Vistas created projects to assist person with disabilities, assisted the food program, and created health fair.

Eleanor Kaye Johnson: Short Bio

Eleanor Kaye Johnson is a choreographer/dance instructor, performer, community advocate, and the founder of DansArtery, a nonprofit that promotes, instructs, and presents arts programming for community development and education, we include all with special needs, seniors, established artists, and young people while assisting them with developing their artistic intellect. We want to instill in communities that through creative expression one can find relaxation and purposeful activities which develops self-worth, purpose, and enhances the physical and mental well-being.

“Her dance styles can be classified as African Caribbean folk forms and movement mixed with Modern phasing an amalgam of Dunham and Graham.” James Hart – City of Detroit Cultural Resource, 2000. Her work has been influenced by Shirley Phillips-Horne, Beverly Varner, Ali Abdullah, Katherine Dunham, Jacqueline Hilsman, Clifford Fears, Marjorie Hassard, Kathline Tenniswood, Martha Graham, and Eleo Pomares, not to mention, Eleanor’s ability to be a jazz influencer who creates movement with extraordinary feel for the instrumentation.

Highlights in Eleanor’s career include dance theater commissions from University of West Florida to choreograph “Ain’t Misbehaving”, “Oklahoma” Edna Boykin Theatre, in North Carolina, Atlanta’s Fly-By Theatre, Spelman College, and Fulton County Arts Council to create an interdisciplinary performance based on the life of muralist Hale Woodruff.( to name a few) She taught dance at the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta and integrated dance with science at Morehouse School of Medicine’s Benjamin Carson Science Academy Summer Camp, Eleanor has lectured on “The Art of Dance: What’s Hidden in the Figures” at Duke University’s Dance Black Joy: Global Affirmations and Defiance Conference. Her work has generated grant funding and awards from the Detroit Arts Council; Boston’s Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts; Mobile, Alabama’s Africatown Committee; Arts Council of Northwest Florida; North Carolina Arts Council/Arts Council of Wilson; Wayne County Mental Health; University of West Florida; and the Florida Department of Health. Recently, performing in local museums collaborating with other artists honoring historic traditions, as well as being innovative.

As a community enrichment artist/human service specialist at 65, Eleanor provides art programming for senior, undeserved youth, and people with disabilities and continues to demonstrate the interconnectedness of the arts while embracing the communicative, healing, joyous powers of dance. Per Eleanor, “Dance shows us we’re all connected and intertwined; we have the ability to choreograph a better world.”
