ENG 101: First-Year Composition (10 sections)

First-year writing course with emphasis on developing compositional skills with an emphasis on research-based writing and understanding the writing process. Study of analytical skills integral to the writing of complex arguments through the development of an original thesis, supportive ideas, and advanced research. I place special emphasis on teaching writing as a process looking at writing in cultural and ethical contexts.

ENG 102: First Year Composition (18 sections)

First-year writing course. Special emphasis is placed on critical thinking, close

reading, analysis, and advanced research skills through the development,

writing, and revision of complex arguments. I emphasize writing to support synthesis of

written text and logical development of specific writing goals.

Grand Canyon University Fall 2016 to present

ENG-105: First Year Composition I (8 sections)

First-year writing course. This writing-intensive course focuses on academic prose,

including various types of essays, arguments, and constructions. Typical section has 50-90 students, and I am assigned 1-2 Teaching Assistants.

ENG-106: First Year Composition II (6 sections)

First-year writing course. This writing-intensive course explores various types of

research writing, with a focus on constructing essays, arguments, and research

reports based on primary and secondary sources. Typical section has 30-60 students, and I am assigned 1-2 Teaching Assistants.

ENG-107: Writing for the Sciences (1 section)

First-year writing course for Computer Science and Engineering majors. This is a new course effective Fall 2021. Students develop three extensive (1500-1800 words) papers which include: Scientific Blog, Internal Evaluative Report, and White Paper. The course is an alternative to Composition II to prepare STEM students for the type of technical writing they will encounter in their professional life.

UNV-100: Developmental Writing Skills (3 sections)

This course is for students who need to improve their foundational English writing skills and strategies. The class reviews fundamentals such as grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and effective paragraph development. It also focuses on the basics of prewriting and revision strategies. Students begin with simple writing tasks, but progressively increase to more complex multi-paragraph essay assignments in preparation for academic writing at the college level.

ENG-466: Technical Writing (2 sections)

This is an Upper Division writing intensive course for students in their senior year of completing a professional writing major. The emphasis is on learning the fundamental skills of technical communication in the professional workplace. Students learn to identify the subjective and personal components of technical writing through small analytical assignments. They then analyze various types of process descriptions and instructions used in technical writing. The students develop a substantial writing project in which they detail or demonstrate a technical activity. The final document incorporates extensive instructor feedback to prepare it for professional publication.

ENG-250: World Literature (1 section)

This course examines literature in translation from Beowulf to Beckett with an emphasis on understanding the issues and problems associated with Literature in Translation. Students lean and apply how a knowledge of Literary Theory can help to better understand Literature and an author’s worldview. Students learn to understand genre and how it developed to guide readers through a particular theme or literary medium and the problem of classification of a specific text. Several 3–5-page essays are developed on a theme from a particular text or an historical period of literature. A final essay of 15-20 words focusing on a major text such as Dante, Keats, or Beckett.

ENG-424: Early American Literature (1 section)

This course examines the foundations of American Literature form James Fenimore Cooper to Walt Whitman. Students study the factors that influenced the development of literature in America such as technological advances in printing and transportation and the development of copywrite law. This is a writing intensive course with several short essays and written analysis developed throughout the course. I emphasized the influences of Emerson and Thoreau on developing an American character, the influence of Romanticism on American Literary movements, and the development of Feminist Literature such as Fanny Fern, Elizabeth Drew, and Kate Chopin. A final essay of 15-20 pages examines a work by an American author such as Douglas, Melville, or Hawthorne.

Writing

I am currently writing a biography of writer Willa Cather as a non-scholarly book intended for the general public. Additionally, I am writing a scholarly article for peer review which I intend to submit to the Willa Cather Archive at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. I have also written a body of non-published poetry which I intend for publication in the near future.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (Non-Teaching)

Terumo, Denver, CO 5/2019 -8/2019 Software Engineer

Verify software for complex Medical Device prototype circuit board. Manage several configurations using RTOS Linux and HP ALM using agile processes. Validate software developed in a Natural Language processor and convert legacy scripting language to C++ for compatibility with SDET.

Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN 5/207 – 8/2017 Software Reliability Engineer

Responsible for developing software reliability models for complex medical devices via various data driven models and tools. Include monitoring testing performance, conducting specification reviews, investigating test anomalies, and working with customers to mitigate performance defects.

GE Appliances & Lighting, Louisville, KY 2012-2015

Perform Software testing of connected-home consumer appliances. Ensure integrity and correct functionality of IOS and Android apps, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi applications. Lead team of from 5-10 engineers to develop technical requirements and design software quality tests. Also, worked closely with various disciplines such as software, systems, and hardware to solve technical problems and coordinate solutions for customers. Implemented Agile processes and acted as Agile SCRUM master. Participated in mentoring of EDISON engineers (described above).

Engineering consulting at Fluidic Energy, GE, Intel, and General Dynamics 2010-2012

Fluidic Energy 2011-2012: Developed software test methodologies for state-of-the-art Electric Vehicle battery system.

GE 2011: Designed and implemented software designs for complex medical devices such as MRI and CAT scanners, and medical instrumentation to ensure FDA technical compliance.

Intel 2011: Developed complex software to ensure functionality of Intel audio and graphics drivers across all hardware versions and Windows versions.

General Dynamics 2010: Developed software and performed systems integration for new version of GPS space-based navigation system.

Mykotronx, Torrance, CA 2004-2010 Program Manager and Lead Engineer

Software Systems Integration Lead Engineer, and Project Manager. Responsible for ensuring the functionality of software and hardware in an integrated system. Also, responsible for managing the systems integration discipline which included planning, and forecasting manpower and resources for technical bids on contracts. Reported project status regularly to upper management. Managed team of between 5-20 engineers to ensure software requirements were implemented and hardware functioned as designed in final product.

Engineering consulting at General Dynamics, Biomeriux, and Boeing 2000-2003

General Dynamics 2003: Designed state-of-the-art software to replace legacy system that was no longer maintainable. Integrated and tested end product before delivery to customer.

Biomeriux 2002: Responsible for verifying software requirements integrity, and that all designed software was in compliance with FDA standards for a complex medical device. Worked closely with various technical disciplines to ensure all bugs and anomalies were addressed, designed, and implemented per requirements.

Lockheed-Martin, Fort Worth, TX 1992-2000

Integrated Product Team Lead for complex avionics systems. Responsible for test software design and verification that systems integration performed as required. Extensive travel to supplier vendors to perform oversight and ensure all technical requirements were designed as required for supplier delivery to prime contractor. Interfaced with various technical and management disciplines to ensure schedules, costs, and technical requirements could be met. Designed complex software to perform system-level diagnostics from both supplier specifications and system integrators software requirements.

Technical Writer for various Aerospace Companies, Los Angeles, CA 1980-1992

McDonnell Douglas 1989-1992: Developed technical publications for aircraft vehicle flight personnel, as well as maintenance personnel and end-user customers. Developed complex step-by-step technical instructions for factory production personnel. Also responsible as editor to review junior tech writers and ensure quality of publication content.

Allied-Signal 1985-1988: Developed technical manuals factory assembly personnel, and publications for customer maintenance personnel and product users. Developed test requirements specifications, detailed functional test plans, and designed specific tests for engineering design and product integration.

Lear 1980-1984: Developed technical publications for both aircraft flight and maintenance personnel. Developed detail procedures and practices that improved the quality of various steps in the production process. Implemented quality initiatives that improved overall quality of production. Developed first software requirements documentation for design of first primarily software-based avionics system.

Proposal and Grant Writer for local Federal Poverty agency, Sacramento, CA 1976-1979

Responsible for turning requests for funding for various poverty programs into grant proposals for funding. Responsible for writing the grant proposal for the initial Meals-On-Wheels program for seniors which is still a viable program. Worked with local social service delivery agencies and poverty advocate concerns to deliver the best use of Federal poverty program funds.
