Qualifications
I am currently working as a substitute teacher for Tyler ISD.
I retired from teaching as preschool teacher for children with disabilities in May of 2023. The time I spent with Special Education for Tyler ISD enabled me to build a rapport with my families and students. All the children required individual plans for their education. I developed goals; implemented them and recorded growth and/or regression. I reported to the parents any of my concerns and help transition skills from school to home.
I also worked in homes doing training with autistic children. I am confident in identifying needs, reporting my findings; assisting families with changes to the environment to help their child better adapt and or cope with his/her autism.
I have worked with emotionally disturbed children, intellectually disabled, children with multiple disabilities and more. I am confident in helping identify the school and home needs of the children.
I have been a teacher for student teachers coming into the education program. The students complete their student teaching fieldwork under my supervision. I have worked with general education majors, special education majors, and occupational therapy majors. I have also mentored incoming teachers new to the field.
I am confident in developing and implementing accommodations and modifications for students with specific learning differences. My doctoral research has been focused on inclusion practices.
Work History
Summer 2018 - 2022--I worked as a job coach for the Summer Earn and Learn program. I work with adults with cognitive delays, autism, and other disabilities. I teach them skills needed to be successful in the work field. I make modification and accommodations in the field as needed. Some include picture task analysis diagrams, jigs, breaking down procedures, etc.
August 2013 to 2018 – Field inspector. I inspected homes primarily in the East Texas area, related to insurance claims, foreclosure, delinquent payment history, and occupancy verification. I had to utilize computer/tablet/phone apps to submit documentation for inspections, write reports, interview homeowners/occupants, and collect paperwork.
August 2010 to July 2013--Tutor, Team Lead for Tyler, Texas, Tutors With Computers. I worked part time for Tutors with Computers. I worked in student homes, completing paperwork, and compiling nightly reports for my supervisor. This company was part of Supplemental Education Services offered to some Tyler ISD, Longview ISD and Marshall ISD students. I have taught several workshops/trainings required by Tutors with Computers to staff. I managed up to 17 field representatives in this position. The company closed in July of 2013.
2003 to Current, PPCD Teacher, Tyler ISD
I have been a regular Preschool Programs teacher, a transition Preschool teacher, and a Structured Teaching Class teacher. I am responsible for writing and implementing individual plans of education for children with various needs. I work with staff to get the children on track to make and maintain their planned goals/objectives for the current year. I work with parents to help see that the skills learned in my classroom are generalized to the home. I am responsible for instructing and assessing all the students in my classroom based on their individual needs.
I have also developed our school yearbook, which requires organization and meeting many deadlines in order to print on time.
I have been a mentor teacher to new special education teachers. I teach workshops related to classroom management, instruction, differentiation of instruction, strategies for working with students with Autism, and supplemental lessons for maintenance and practice of skills.
2003, Mabank ISD, Pre-Kindergarten/PPCD inclusion teacher--I helped implement and direct a full inclusion program of preschool children ages 3 to 5. I worked with two other teachers collaboratively and developed a program for children with and without special needs to be in one room the entire school day. We wrote our own curriculum and modified for the children needing modifications. We saw great growth in all areas of development. I taught that program for one year. Upon leaving the program and taking a job with Tyler ISD, they are still using our program.
1992 to 2002, Paraprofessional/Teaching Assistant, Mabank ISD--I worked as an instructional assistant in the PPCD program with children having multiple disabilities. I was working with the teacher to implement the children’s individual education plans. I did some occupational/physical therapy as directed and trained through our OT and PT on campus, I worked with many things including tube feedings, changing prosthetics, applying leg braces, suctioning, etc. My job included all of these things but also it included much more. I had to monitor safety, figure out ways to adapt activities to meet the needs of children with orthopedic disabilities. I had to work with outside services, planning and organizing the classroom events.
