Nursing Officer – Medical and Surgical Wards
Central Regional Hospital (Trauma and Specialist Hospital) - Winneba- Ghana August 2020 to Present
The Regional Hospital is the largest hospital in the Winneba Municipality and comes second only to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in the region. It is a 150-bed tertiary government hospital and serves as a referral point for all district hospitals in the Central Region of Ghana. It is an integrated facility providing holistic healthcare and can boast of multiple operating rooms, intensive care units, emergency unit, neonatal intensive care unit, and a well-stocked radiology department among others. The medical and surgical wards have a combined bed capacity of sixty-five (65) beds and caters for all in-patient medical and surgical cases. The patients admitted are a fair mix and range from trauma and orthopedic cases to acute medical conditions like stroke, heart failure and pulmonary thrombo-embolism. Skills and Responsibilities
• Monitoring and interpreting vital signs including Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Temperature, Respiratory Rate and Oxygen Saturation
• Preparation of quality care plans for individual patients taking into consideration all their biopsychosocial needs
• Wound care assessment and management specific to the wound type: laceration, burns, abscess abrasion, and pressure sores
• Assisting of physician with thoracentesis, chest tube insertion, pleural fluid aspiration, endotracheal intubation, paracentesis, suturing, incision and drainage and lumbar puncture
• Head to toe examination of patients including neurological parameters such as Tone, Power, Reflexes, Sensation and Co-ordination
• Adequate assessment of pain and utilization of appropriate pain management techniques
• Preparation of quality care plans for clients and documentation of outcomes to measure efficacy
• IV insertion and sample collection for all clients
• Administration of medications via the nasal, oral, intravenous, rectal, intramuscular, subcutaneous routes
• Oxygen administration via nasal cannula, face mask, non – rebreather mask and venturi mask
• Monitoring of the hemodynamic status of patients and interpretation of the results
• Urethral catheter insertion – female and males
• Diagnostic studies such as blood glucose taking, urine specimen collection, urine dipstick and ketone strip
• Preparation of patients for x-ray, EEG, ECG, echocardiography, and other diagnostic procedures

Central Regional Hospital (Trauma and Specialist Hospital) Winneba- Ghana
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology ward has a thirty-five (35) bed capacity and caters for all in-patient obstetrics and gynaecological cases. The patients admitted to this ward ranges from clients with complicated pregnancies such as pre-eclampsia and placenta previa to patients undergoing myomectomies and hysterectomies. On the average, there are six nurses on duty per shift which translates
to about six patients per nurse at full capacity.
Skills and Responsibilities
• Counselling on sexual transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS
• Ante-natal education on danger signs of pregnancy, nutrition in pregnancy, personal hygiene, modes of delivery, exclusive breastfeeding and post-natal care and administration of vaccines
• Management of conditions in pregnancy including hypertensive conditions in pregnancy, Gestational diabetes mellitus, bleeding in early and late pregnancy and multiples pregnancies.
• Preparing patient for labour, caesarean deliveries, myomectomies and hysterectomies
• Conducted prenatal classes for expectant mothers and their partners on birthing processes and postpartum care.
• Determined appropriate interventions for high-risk pregnancies based on assessment findings.

The Municipal Hospital is the second largest hospital in the Winneba Municipality. It is a 75-bed secondary government hospital and serves as the first referral point for all the clinics and health centers in
and around Winneba. The Hospital offers a range of in- patient and out- patient services including; emergency, medical and surgical services, obstetric services, reproductive health and family planning services, neonatal ICU and pediatric services. There is also a psychiatric unit and an eye clinic. During my one (1) year stay in this hospital I rotated through all the departments and gained the necessary skills needed to manage the various conditions. The hospital uses Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) to store and manage patients’ health information.
• Provided basic nursing care such as monitoring vital signs, collecting lab specimens, and changing dressings.
• Observed patient behavior and reported changes to healthcare team members.
• In the neonatal ICU, helped new mothers with kangaroo mother care, counselling on the need for phototherapy for neonatal jaundice
