Manager, Human Resources and Nonprofit Management Services, United Way for Southeastern MI, Detroit, MI. 4/1996-3/2004.

Recruited and re-hired as the first line of contact, manage, audit, assess, organize, and administer the benefit plans for United Way and 92 affiliated agencies. Plans included medical, life, disability, and dental. The Defined

Benefit Pension Plan had a third party recordkeeper had 62 participating agencies. April 2000, new assignment to manage Human Resources for United Way. The Non-pension plans were discontinued, and staff reduced from

three to one; pension responsibilities increased to full-service, calculated pension asset for Plan disaffiliations; oversaw a quarterly Pension Advisory Board, made PowerPoint presentations, liaison to Plan participants, six investment managers, an external recordkeeper, actuary and a pension attorney. The HR role reported to the Unite Way director of Human Resources and Administration while the pension responsibilities reported to the United Way CFO, and monthly meetings with the United Way President and CEO. Responsible for presentations, advising, training, problem-solving, consulting, conflict resolution, grievances, contract interpretation, meetings with union representative, and related duties.

Financial Aid Officer I & II, WSU Main Campus & School of Medicine, Detroit, MI. 10/1991-04/1996.

Financial Aid Officer I: processed undergraduate and graduate student financial aid, counseled students, parents, and student recruitment on campus and referrals. March,1992, assigned to lead a unit of level I professionals and College Work Study Students. From an oral proposal, was approved to write my master’s thesis to improve customer services for a better student and staff experience.

Financial Aid Officer II. (Promotion upon degree fulfillment). Overseer of in-person and telephone customer services. Eliminated a history of having “long lines, slow service, disgruntled students and staff.” All financial aid awards were processed and credited to Student Registration and Accounts Receivable within the term students enrolled. An accounting glitch was fixed, eliminated the need to operate a separate satellite office during final registrations to process fee deferrals to remove a registration “hold” and discontinued evening walk-in services.

Lateral transfer to the School of Medicine to supervised full-time and College Work-Study staffs; provide consulting and financial aid services to medical students and reported to the associate director. School liaison to assigned fellowships, scholarships, and other financial aid related programs. Performed special projects as assigned by the Associate Director.

Human Resources Consultant/Manager, AT&T, Troy, MI. (8/1989-1990)

Recruited to review and recommend changes and updates to existing policies and procedures manual for human resources director and Legal Department approval. Setup and managed three graduate student internship relocations for assignments in Michigan. Designed and supervised a central personnel filing and records retention system with one college intern. Designed a new application system with help from IT for employees to apply for company jobs without paper. The system was piloted in Michigan, approved by the Corporate Office, and remains the paperless system for employees to apply for internal vacancies.

Human Resources Director, United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Detroit, MI. (6/1984-8/1989)

Recruited and hired as the first director of human resources when non-professional employees voted to be represented by the UAW union. Designed, developed, setup and managed the new department with a secretary. Met with all managers, directors, executives and two UAW Union representatives to formally introduce myself, learn of any pressing issues and vacancies. The first line of contact for new hires, questions, concerns, benefits, job postings, new hire orientation, records, employee and labor relations, placement, records management, Workers Compensation, Unemployment Compensation.

Outcomes were: Improved staff and management relations, implemented quarterly all-staffs joint meetings, increased staff training, new hires orientation and exit interviews, special projects and assignments from the president and vice president for administration; represented the employer for internal and external assignments related to human resource; focused on strategic planning for guidance and direction.
