SUMMARY
Primary Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Public Administration from Arizona State University 2001 with a multi-disciplinary focus in social sciences.
Extensive experience working collaboratively in teams and in other groups ranging from faculty service in academic units and on numerous college and university committees and task forces, academic program governance, state-wide political appointments in Arizona and Texas, and serving on and leading many administrative and management teams in nonprofit service and advocacy organizations. Led assessment and program evaluation teams for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Arizona Department of Economic Security.
Commitment to and experience in the inclusion of diverse student populations in my teaching and to diverse employee and client populations for organizations providing direct services and advocacy to often disenfranchised and otherwise disadvantaged communities of men and women. Commitment to diversity includes inclusion based on race/ethnicity, gender, age, political and religious beliefs, and personal experiences.
Over 20 years of teaching excellence in which students identified my courses as among not only their favorites but also the courses in which they believe they have learned the most.
Excellent written and spoken communication skills including small group facilitation and participation, teaching classes ranging in size from small in-person to large lecture classes and for online classes of various sized cohorts, development of written policies and procedures, published articles, television and radio interviews, successful grant and funding requests, and assessment protocols and program evaluation reports at the local, state, and federal level.
Additional Qualifications:
Experience teaching in a wide range of social science disciplines including political economy, quantitative and qualitative research, organizational leadership, team building, nonprofit management, political science, policy analysis, American government, lobbying and advocacy, public policy issues and
problem-solving, always with a multi-disciplinary focus and attention to developing students’ skills in writing and critical thinking.
Over 20 years of experience in successful post-secondary teaching
Curriculum development for individual courses as well as for programs in public administration, liberal studies, justice studies, and Credit for Prior Learning at public and private universities of various sizes for both online and on-campus majors.
I have experience and expertise primarily in two areas: 21 years of nonprofit organizational leadership and administration, and public policy development, implementation, advocacy, and evaluation, from 1975 – 1996, and 21 years of online and face-to-face college and university teaching, curriculum development and assessment, and faculty service starting in 1998.
The two areas are not distinct, however. They are interrelated and show a harmonious 40-plus-year career. My education was an important thread weaving the two areas together beginning with my bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies where I concentrated on nonprofit organization management along with the interdisciplinary focus required of the Liberal Studies program. I continued those emphasis areas for my master’s in public administration maintaining a focus that combined women’s studies and public policy analysis as they related to the leadership and administration of public and nonprofit organizations. Finally, in my doctoral program through which I earned a Ph.D. in Public Administration my course work and my dissertation continued the interdisciplinary work in women’s studies and public policy analysis, organizational leadership, and training.
One of the unique aspects of my professional background is the connection between my work in administration and advocacy in women’s issues and organizational leadership and my teaching. I believe that students appreciate that what I teach is also what I have practiced as an organization director and in my participation in academic settings. As I said above, the link between my education, my professional and practical experience, and my teaching has been a theme throughout my career.
