Interior Designer

Cox, Kliewer & Company – Virginia Beach, VA

- October 2011 to Febraury 2014

Worked on a project team for project development which includes meeting with client to discuss project requirements and direction of design. Based on those meetings selection of finishes including carpet, tiles, paint, counters, cabinets for various areas in projects as well as design of some basic layout options for floorplans to present to client for approval. Finally, interior floorplans, elevations, detail drawings, casework

(cabinetry) details and elevations, lighting and ceiling plans, ADA code layouts for path of travel as well as general accessibility and finish schedule for every room in project to ensure finishes for every area had been selected and recorded. Drawings are typically submitted for permit review with the city where the project is being constructed and following their review, revisions are made as needed and then re-submitted with the city. The client is kept in the loop with all these review and revisions. While at Cox, Kliewer & Company, I was able to take and pass the NCIDQ exam – which is the 3rd party certification that all Interior Designers must pass to then be licensed in their state. After passing the NCIDQ, I was able to take the state’s exam, pass and be licensed in the state of Virginia.

Interior Designer

Waller, Todd & Sadler Architects – Virginia Beach, VA April 2009 to October 2011

Worked under a senior designer on a 9 million dollar furniture project to help her select the furniture provider and negotiate the contract, check the furniture drawings to ensure that all parts of the project were consistent in their design and installation. This ended up being a total of 4 buildings.

Selected the interior finishes for 2 barracks facilities and a dining facility, met with client to walk facilities, created a scheme, presented and was approved, provided floorplans, interior elevations and a finish schedule for each facility, also provided multiple binders with boards that held physical finish samples which is a requirement of all military branches for all interior projects.

While at Waller, Todd & Sadler, I started the process of taking parts of the NCIDQ exam

– it has 3 parts, 2 multiple choice parts (4 hours each) and 1 drawing portion which is split into 3 parts within the day (8 hours). I was able to pass the two multiple choice parts. Part of the reason I left Waller, Todd & Sadler was to take a position where I would be able to learn and grow in my drawing ability as there was not much required at this job and it made taking the 3rd part of the NCIDQ hard for me to pass without that experience and working knowledge.

Interior Designer

Quality Technical Services – Virginia Beach, VA

Learned all about the Herman Miller furniture line and worked as a designer to design and specify Herman Miller product on multiple projects. Worked on two wedges of the pentagon as well as several J&J projects and several other military instllations.

Help the company move locations and become more organized in their new location. Interior Designer

Moseley Architects – Virginia Beach, VA

May 2007 to March 2008

I worked as an Intern over winter break and was asked back to intern over spring break

– during my internships I was asked to re-select finishes and create multiple options on a project at Virginia Tech as well as create a new floor pattern for throughout the facility. Client and Prioject architect were so pleased with the presentation and options presented that I was asked to come back full time after I graduated. Worked as a designer after graduation as well as some architectural support when needed – I wanted to learn and be as flexible as possible to be able to help when needed but also for the knowledge that I would not get otherwise about architectural detailing.
