CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST, RESEARCH AND TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Extensive expertise in clinical laboratory in different units such as specimen collection, antiretroviral therapy (virology lab), bacteriology, parasitology, hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, immunology/serology, and urinalysis (briefly, the skills of clinical laboratory science I possess are: monitoring the quality of testing, correlating test results with patient's condition, identifying abnormal cells, culturing & identifying bacteria, assuring safe transfusion of blood products, selecting & evaluating laboratory equipment, operating computerized instruments, & selecting, orienting & evaluating employees).

As a researcher and professor of medical virology, I trained more than 1800 medical and health science students in various medical colleges and Universities. I taught subjects such as medical virology, advanced diagnostic microbiology, medical microbiology, bacteriology, immunology, mycology, medical parasitology, hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, serology, and urinalysis. Each subject I instructed had significant laboratory practical sessions from basic laboratory practices up to advanced techniques such as molecular methods. More than 95% of my students passed their final examinations and were successful in their theoretical, practical, internal and external examinations.

I worked as principal investigator (PI) in HIV/TB department in Ethiopian Public Health Institute, which is a national research organization. I reviewed mega projects, conceived new projects, and revived a project that was discontinued due to lack of expertise. I also trained junior scientists and senior medical laboratory personnel on HIV-1.

I proposed different projects and published more than 20 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and also I published 1 book chapter. I served as a reviewer in various scientific journals such as International Journal of Microbiology, BioMed Research International journals, International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID), Journal of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (JIAPAC), International Journal of Microbiology and I also reviewed locally submitted proposals and manuscripts for consideration of funding and publication, respectively.

I led the department of medical laboratory technology and school of health sciences and supervised and mentored staffs of the clinical laboratory while they were analyzing clinical samples. I was a lead expert in the internal and external quality assurance unit of the teaching clinical laboratory hospital in the College of medicine and health sciences, University of Gondar, Ethiopia

I had a Student Assistant position for two years (2013-2014) in the Institute of Virology, Faculty of Medicine, Leipzig University, Germany.

In brief, my scientific contribution was important for developing countries like Ethiopia as well as other scientific communities of the world in formulating health policies.

PERTINENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Innovation of a new method to transport whole-blood specimens by treating with ethylene and propylene glycol from Ethiopia, Africa to Germany and I was able to extract RNA from whole-blood specimens stored for up to 18 months. In existing protocols collection of RNA from whole blood is challenging and the whole- blood needs to be separated to components immediately or up to 2 hours’ time for proviral DNA and HIV-1 RNA. This technique is significantly important to Ethiopia as well as other developing countries as transporting plasma/serum samples to referral laboratories is challenging due to frequent power outage and lack of facilities in the peripheral health laboratories to separate the whole-blood samples into components.

We found more mutations and higher frequency of polymorphisms in proviral DNA than HIV-1 RNA. This result may provide convenient tools that are suitable for Ethiopia as sequencing proviral DNA is more economical and user friendly than RNA samples.

Proportions of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome among HIV-1 infected patients during antiretroviral therapy were determined and this information has significant advantage for the policy makers in Ethiopia and was a seminal report in Ethiopia.

I was a PI and reviewer of mega projects related to HIV at the National institute of public health in Ethiopia.

I supervised undergraduate, M.Sc. and Ph.D. students while doing their projects and advising on issues related to selecting their research topics.

I mentored more than 2000 health science students while they were doing their fieldwork related to their professional practicum in various health institutions and resettlement areas.

I participated in heath science curriculum development at national level.
