Dear Ohioan,

Did you know that federal laws give unemployment claimants special consideration for financial aid to pay for job training or education? If you are interested in developing new skills, please consider taking advantage of these opportunities. You could be eligible for grants, scholarships, low-interest student loans, or even the Federal Pell Grant, a needs-based grant available to low-income students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree. Pell Grants can help pay for tuition, fees, books, and related expenses at most undergraduate and many certificate programs at universities, community colleges, trade and technical schools, and adult career centers. Pell Grants do not have to be repaid. If you are interested in pursuing these opportunities, please take this letter with you to your school's (or your prospective school's) financial aid office to discuss next steps. For the next 90 days, this letter will confirm you as an eligible unemployment insurance claimant. While it will not guarantee that you will qualify for a Federal Pell Grant, it could help you qualify for that or other forms of financial aid. Your determination of benefits letter also can be used to confirm your status as an unemployment claimant. For answers to frequently asked questions about the Federal Pell Grant, see page 2 of this letter. For general information about grants, scholarships, and financial aid, please visit HigherEd.ohio.gov or OhioMeansJobs.com. For more information about high school equivalence preparation, visit HigherEd.ohio.gov/Aspire.

Sincerely,

Matt Damschroder, Director
