MADDOX ET. AL. V. MOORE: 2001

Plaintiff and co-counsel in successful First Amendment challenge to the placement of a 2.5 ton monument of the Ten Commandments in the rotunda in the Alabama State Judicial Building by Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore. Consolidated with: Glassroth v. Moore, 335 F.3d 1282 (11th Cir. (Ala.) 2003). Was the coordinating attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union in similar cases in Texas, Kentucky, Georgia and Florida.

MUNFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL, TALLADEGA COUNTY, AL: 2007

School compelled students to watch religious films under threat of suspension and allowed local ministers to enter school property for the purpose of recruiting students to attend church in violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Persuaded school to stop illegal activity. MELINDA LEE MADDOX

Represented a member of the school’s honor society who became pregnant. She was expelled from the honor society, but the young man who impregnated her was not, in violation of gender discrimination laws and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14 th

Amendment. Won reinstatement of

the student to the honor society.

CONECUH, MONROE, ESCAMBIA, AND COVINGTON COUNTIES, AL: 1993-95 County jails were dilapidated, unsanitary, leaking water, and infested with vermin, resulting in injuries, illnesses, and infections among the inmates, in violation of the Eighth Amendment. In each case, the county agreed to build a new jail or do substantial renovation to cure the violation. EDUCATION
