Aetna/CVS Health: (November 2012 to April 30, 2021)

Care manager/ Team Leader for a team of nurses. Serves as subject matter expert for various plan sponsors. Educates patients and families in achieving healthy lives and navigating health care challenges. Provides for care from pre-admission to post discharge and follow through to ensure benefits are maximized and care is safe and effective.

Completes discharge-planning needs with network vendors to provide a seamless transition to next level of care.

Provides for Social Determinants of Health to ensure needs are met. Initiates community resources if applicable.

Adheres to all HIPPA regulations, and all other nationally recognized metrics of Standards of Care.

Mt Carmel Health System:

Administrative Director Surgical Services (June 2006, Dec. 2009)

Responsibilities:

Current position is responsible for administrative and operational management for 10 operating rooms and 26 Perianesthesia beds, 16 Short stay beds, Endoscopy Dept., Sterile Processing, Scheduling and Inventory management departments. Responsible for a total FTE of 152. Works collaboratively with Department of Surgery and Anesthesia to effectively manage all service lines except cardiac. Two Direct reports include Two Unit Directors, one for Intra-operative services and SPD, and one is designated for Peri anesthesia Services that includes Endoscopy. Each Unit Director has two clinical managers reporting to them. Directly reporting to me is the Educational Director and the Business Manager.

Selected Accomplishments:

Initiated preference care improvement project. All surgeon preference are standardized and checked with surgeons for accuracy. Front line staff involved in format and standardization of information

Initiated Shared Governance for all departments in the Surgical Care Center. Unit council, employee engagement council, education, and more.

Reorganized all supplies with staff driven committees to reduce par level.

Right sized staffing model to move to staff to volume. Shifts were altered and positions were reduced through attrition. All decisions were made with data presentations identifying hours of maximum operation to staff.

Established weekly service line leader meetings with Director. Worked from an agenda and minutes to ensure communication was clearly cascaded out to all associates.

Weekly meetings with managers. Implemented model of Relationship Based Care as our model for practice. (System initiative). We had book clubs. Reading 5 Dysfunctions of a team, Personal accountability, and Quantum Leadership by Tim Porter O’Grady

The Ohio State University Hospital:

Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, Columbus, Ohio

Associate Director Perioperative Services (June 2004 to Sept 30, 2006))

Responsibilities:

Responsible for administrative and operational activities for a number of related departments including 6 operating rooms, PACU, ambulatory surgery, and Anesthesia. Direct reports include 1 Unit Director of Perioperative Services and three charge nurses.

Selected Accomplishments:

For this fiscal year, all cost centers under budget.

Collaboration to develop Shared Governance in Nursing Project.

Planning committee for new Project Cancer Building Initiative.

Moved into leadership position in the Perioperative Department.

Moved into senior leadership position.

Worked closely with Dr. Pat Ross, Thoracic Surgeon to implement a new lung cancer-screening tool. The first location to receive the camera following FDA approval in the USA.

Worked closely with Dr. Ted Martin to design a portable PET scanner for the OR and a patient table delivery system

University Hospitals of Cleveland:

St. John West Shore/University Hospital, Westlake, Ohio

Director Perioperative Services (1998-2004)

Responsibilities:

Responsible for administrative and operational activities for a number of related departments including 8 operating rooms, PACU, Outpatient Surgery, and Pre-admission Testing/Employee Health. Direct reports include Clinical Manager of the Operating room, Clinical Manager ASU and PACU, and Director of Endoscopy. All five service line managers met with the Unit Director and me weekly.

Selected Accomplishments:

Planned and implemented all phases of open-heart surgery program.

All cost centers in areas of responsibility came in under budget for year.

Achieved reduction in staff turnover to less than 2 percent.

Contributed to increasing surgical volume 20 percent by:

1.Improving customer satisfaction by maximizing utilization of the physician’s time at the facility.

2.Implement performance improvement initiatives with patient/staff population.

3.Create environment that improves and enriches the professional and personal needs of the staff.

Successfully completed JCAHO and AOA certification with no deficiencies for all areas of responsibility.

The most valuable accomplishment involved leading a change initiative to improve departmental culture from fragmented, individual focus to a positive, team-based culture. Demonstrated by improvement of patient, physician, and employee satisfaction.
