PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES

Head of Test Engineering Dpt. - ELETTRONICA S.p.A. Rome

Date: February 2021 – Present

I’m currently the Head of Elettronica’s Test Engineering Department, leading a group of more of 15 multi-disciplinary Engineers and Phds.

The Department is part of the V&V (Verification&Validation) structure and provides solutions that guarantee the Design Verification and Validation at each level of Product decomposition (Systems, Units, Modules, Boards) and the automatic Production Tests execution.

I was handpicked by the Top Management considering my previous experiences, to increase the overall competencies of the Test Engineering Department in term of Quality and System Technical knowledge, in order to better contribute to the Verification&Validation activities, often related to the final Customer Satisfaction.

In fact, for this role, it needs to demonstrate high level of competencies in all the electronic domain of our Product (such as RF/Microwave Circuits, FW, SW, Test Instrumentation, protocols, standards etc.), since the Verification&Validation process comprises all parts designed and manufactured by the Company, from the simpler one to the final Product.

Due to my EW System knowledge, the Department has expanded to include the area of System Emulator, aiming to manage the HW in the loop System Test and Verification.

My Department also represent the Company Technical Authority for all the Test Equipment related to Eurofighter Typhoon 2000 EuroDASS.

In this context, I lead a group of 5 internal and 5 external resources, in the management of all the Test Equipment (i.e. Obsolescence Removal, Medium Life Update, etc.) used in Second Source Production Site (Leonardo – UK, Indra – Spain, Hensoldt – Germany) and in the Military Air force Base in which the Eurofighter Typhoon 2000 are in force, granting the maintenance of the apparatus and the continuity of fleet service in all the Production sites.

The TE (Test Equipment) Program, is related to the Consortium of 4 Nations (Italy, Spain, UK, Germany).

The TE Project Managers meet each months in each Country, discussing to open points and way forward to manage all issues regarding Operations for the Production and maintenance of all EuroDASS EW LRI.

As a Department Responsible, I’m involved in the hiring process of resources, selecting and identifying the right candidate for each projects.

I’m also responsible, for the development plan of each of my collaborators, adopting an approach that permit to standardize the level of competencies guaranteeing an overall Quality of Work and the usage of common working methods.

Project Manager - ELETTRONICA S.p.A. Rome

Date: September 2018 – January 2021

Responsible of a Company Common Core EW Architecture covering all the main EW functions, from the RWR to ECM and Sigint/ELint Purposes.

The Common Core approach permit the reuse of the same System Architecture in a wide range of applications, with great advantage in term of standardization and cost reduction.

I was involved in the standardization process that has produced all the System documentations and parts to be reused in new projects.

EW ECM System Engineer - ELETTRONICA S.p.A. Rome

Date: January 2018 – August 2018

As EW ECM System Engineer I was involved in designing, developing and testing EW System acting as a Self-Protection suite granting countermeasure against RF/Electro optical Weapon System, as well as searching/tracking radar and affecting their correct functioning.

In this role, I was responsible for the integration stage of an Avionic EW suite realizing RWR, ESM and ECM tasks, automatically combined, to assure the RF and IR contrast of specific threats starting from the verification of the System design until the end of Qualification of it inside the Platform (a military helicopter).

Regarding the System, RF passive operations are accomplished by a multichannel broadband receiver combined with passive antennas, while RF countermeasures are dispensed by active phased arrays.

IR contrast is related to DIRCM (Digital InfraRed Counter Measure) operations (LGU, Jamming Turret and ELU), in cooperation whit a Chaff and Flares dispensing System.

During my activities, I led the development of its SW and FW parts, granting the association between the functioning of the System and its specific technical requirements, to be verified with the Customer during Factory Acceptance Test appointments.

I supervised the specialist team during the System integration in order to discover and fix bugs and malfunctions.

I was also responsible of the execution of System functional ground and flight tests.

EW Elint System Engineer - ELETTRONICA S.p.A. Rome

Date: June 2015 – December 2017

As Elint System Engineer I was involved in designing, developing and testing of high accuracy RF sensors able to intercept and analyze complex EM signals at very low power and with very accurate representation, giving the possibility to acquire sensible information on enemy RF weapon systems.

In this role I was responsible for the integration of a federation of such a Systems (System of Systems), tailored for a specific Signit avionic platform for UAE Airforce, insuring the fulfilment of the overall System Requirements.

I first defined the installation and cabling requirements of the overall System, producing related ICD, Electrical schematic and Wiring List document and conducting dedicated workshop with the Aircraft Manufacturer ( Marshall Aerospace - Cambridge), after I follow the Integration stage of 2 of 7 Sub Systems.

I led, together with Project Managers and QA personnel, the Factory Acceptance Tests, during the formal appointments with the Customer.

I prepared technical documentation such Acceptance Test Procedure (ATP) and Report (ATR).

The principal functions of that System is related in high accuracy DoA (Direction of Arrival) definition for unknown threats in combination with high sensitivity performed by passive phased arrays (class of accuracy of decimal degrees RMS) or amplitude/phase comparison of different high directional antennas (class of accuracy of degree RMS). The platform is also equipped with an RF and IR Self Protection suite, by means of a K band RWR, DIRCM, Chaff and Flares dispenser, MWS and LWS Sensors.

The System is able to recognise very complex waveform (Stagger, Jitter, Sliding, Agile, Scan etc) and measure intra and inter pulse modulation of the signal. The entire System is controlled by an EWM and a technical and tactical HMI, giving the possibility to show synthetic data for the EM spectrum acquired.

LRU System/Subsystem Designer - ELETTRONICA S.p.A - Rome

Date: April 2014 – June 2015

RF Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) Designer for EW Systems (ESM/ECM,RWR,ELINT,SIGINT).

Responsible of Receiver and Processing Unit (RPU), main Unit of an EW System. Producing technical documentation according to MIL STD procedures/ISO 9100 standard, following Design Review, Verifying and Testing of Design based on standard System Engineering Process (V model), Supervise Qualification Tests (ENV/EMI/EMC/Functional), Support the Production Team for the construction and testing of new HW.
