Provide Clinical Ethics Consultations at the request of patient’s, families, physicians, or treatment team members. Clinical Ethicists work with individuals or teams to think through ethical questions, dilemmas and issues in a thoughtful and precise manner. Clinical Ethicists offer council, mediation and recommendations. This position also provides formal and informal education and the role of Attending Clinical Ethicist for Fellows.

As a change agent and transformational health care leader, established a new Hospice and developed an inpatient Palliative Care program for a large health system. Created a shared vision within a growing staff to provide care that meets the highest quality standards. Forged positive and collaborative relationships between physicians, the community, all Renown entities and community health agencies. Marshalled resources to establish cost effective patient care and provided education on policy, procedure, regulatory compliance and programmatic changes.
Established a multidisciplinary Palliative Care program that provides consultations to 7-10% of all acute admissions
Opened a new Hospice in May, 2015; the initial Joint Commission survey of Renown Hospice Care identified 5 leading practices. Full accreditation achieved.
Provided leadership to the Clinical Ethics Committee and provided Clinical Ethics Consultations.
Washoe County Health District September 2006 – June 2012
Division Director –Community and Clinical Health Services
Directed development and implementation of plans to address and improve community health needs. Led the development, implementation, and evaluation of public health nursing services and other Division programs. Worked with the District health leaders to develop impactful policies, programs and services. Collaborated with federal, state, and county agencies, professional groups, and other organizations concerned with the improvement of nursing and health services for Washoe County.
Participated as a leader in the Washoe County Health District response to the H1N1 Flu epidemic as the Director over the immunization and nursing resources of the County
Significantly restructured the Public Health Visiting Nursing Program during the loss of funding in 2008, preserving critical needs for the community's most vulnerable mothers and children
Interim Chief Health Officer
Planned, organized, directed, and managed Public Health programs with an annual budget of $18 million for the regional Washoe County Health District while representing the District’s activities, programs and services with community organizations and other governmental agencies. Ensured enforcement of Federal, State and local health laws and regulations. Directed staff in providing Public Health Education programs.
Active Board member of the Multi-Stakeholder Emergency Medical Services Task Force which developed performance measures for the Pre-Hospital EMS delivery system
As a member of the Washoe County’s Fundamental Review team, used the Baldrige Quality Initiative process to improve services to all community citizens
Assistant Division Director- Community and Clinical Health Services
Organized and supported the direction and administration of public health and public health nursing activities for Washoe County programs. Led the public health staff, including nurses, nurse practitioners, and program managers engaged in community, home visiting and clinical nursing services. Assisted the formulation of public health and public health nursing policies and practices, procedures and protocols; budget preparation, program planning and evaluation.
The Children’s Cabinet 2002 – December 2006
Executive Director
Spearheaded the accomplishments of The Children’s Cabinet, a non-profit agency serving children and families. Oversaw the judicious allocation of a $14 million annual budget. Worked closely with the Board of Trustees to develop and implement the agency’s strategic plan. Served as the agency’s spokesperson and conducted an active and ongoing public relations campaign to increase visibility and viability of the agency in public and private sectors ensuring the organization and its mission were properly presented.
Founding member of the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative (JDAI) mirroring national best practices that significantly decreased the rate of juvenile incarceration

Corporate Director of Clinical Services
Member of the corporate staff of Life Care Management Services, L.L.C., which owned and operates thirteen hospitals situated throughout the United States. Supported and provided consulting services to all clinical areas and developed clinical programs including: Wound Care, Pain Management, Case Management, Utilization Review, Patient/Family Education and Clinical Pathways. Served on all hospital boards, edited the company journal, and served on multiple committees including outcomes and corporate compliance.
Helped Life Care grow from three facilities to thirteen, establishing consistent clinical standards at facilities across the country
Tahoe Pacific Hospital (A Life Care facility) 1996 – 1999
Clinical Operations Officer (COO)
Led overall operations of clinical functions in a long-term acute care facility providing care to medically complex patients, including Nursing, Rehabilitation, Cardiopulmonary, Dietary, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy, Case Management, Education and Social Services. Created and managed clinical area budgets totaling $8 million.
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center 1991 – 1996
Critical Care Manager (ICU and Cardiac ICU and Surgical Unit)
Planned, developed, oversaw general operations of a 90 person staff, and performed marketing and medical interface for the critical care areas. Served on multiple hospital committees including Research, Infection Control and Ethics Committee. Developed and managed an operating budget of greater than $3.5 million annually.
