Writing is an uninterrupted, fully delivered thought, and an offering of a perspective that has no boundary on what it can accomplish for its reader. "This is going to hurt like hell...but, wait!"

I look through old photos of myself, searching through nearly thirty years of aging, a movie plays in the forefront of my mind where my 45-years-old self has the opportunity to talk to my 17-year-old self, to give her warnings of heartbreak and anguish, to tell her of the tragedies to come, and give to her some validation she will make it through it all.

If I could be granted just one piece of advice to my younger self; before she has children; before she marries, divorces, then finds her forever love; before she finds art as a unique gift; before the loss, the hurt, the rebuilding, and finding herself again; what would I say?Would I tell her to do anything differently?Would I tell her to to avoid the people who hurt us the most

Would I tell her about her children, all four of them, and their brilliance? Would I warn her about financial disasters, bad bosses, disloyal friends, or family betrayal? After thinking about this, I have to say, I would likely just watch her from afar, saying nothing that would ruin the incredible experience of her maturity, of her spiritual design, of her climb away from the pile of debris that she would later appreciate as her Everest. I wouldn't want to take a single piece of her understanding away, nor would I expect her to accept it; some things about myself have dramatically transformed, but that part of me, that wouldn't accept what someone tells me about me, would not ever change. This idea of what makes us who we are after every boil-over, every minute spent wishing we knew the future, or the idea we could visit ourselves to give some guidance, advice, or warning, tells me also we should not regret a single moment, that it all plays a critical part to who, where, and why we are here, at the place where our feet touch grass, in this very confusing, beautiful, sweet place we stand today. I might tell her just one thing, just one piece of information that truly shouldn't change the trajectory of her life, that might keep her spirit from destroying itself in those dark, ugly, terrifying "why's?"I would simply tell her, "this is going to hurt like hell, but wait, you're going to love who you become.' WRITING SAMPLE ONE

"This is going to hurt like hell...but, wait!"

All the ways we use the word 'wave'; as hello, as come here, as here I am, as goodbye, but the kind of wave in this painting I made this last week for Joseph is none of those. I think of our life together easily compares to an ocean; high tides are good days, low tides, our vacant and distant days, but no matter what is happening in our lives, the ocean is always there, the water is always flowing, the current is always pulling us close, pushing our worries away, and shore is always visible. Waves, they crush, they glide, they drown one man but provide driftwood to save another. They bring sailors home, they pull ships into their mouths, too. They are so unpredictable, like the people who are in our lives, who sometimes offer our most important rescue, but who also have abandoned us for dead. The ocean is on our side, let it swallow every person who stores bad intentions for us, let the surf be a spy to the voices we cannot hear, that we never question why people we thought by our side forever never came home from the water's edge.
