Kurt Richard Bartley New Orleans, LA

BIO/RESUME

Mission: To secure employment where I can utilize my artisan and logistic skills to work with a dedicated people friendly team who with respect make customers and feel welcome and accepted. Born: Albion N.Y. (near Buffalo) on a farm, learning to drive and operate machinery such as tractors, combines, forklifts etc. at an early age while hunting, fishing, and acquiring respect for land and water. Allowed to cultivate one half acre of land myself, I began my own land management mini farm, irrigated from the creek out back, and turtles were invited! My parents, Ellen and Bernard met due to the Japanese invasion of Pearl Harbor while working on the General Motors assembly line at Rochester Products, N.Y He joined the U.S. Air Force as an engineer, then upon returning he was transferred to the General Motors ‘Tech Center’ in Michigan and traveled the nation with ‘Team Study’ as a factory efficiency executive. His engineering knowledge rubbed off on me, and I was encouraged to know a little about carpentry, plumbing, masonry and electronics. Mother encouraged me to ‘try out’ for everything. Hence, Boy Scouting escalated me to create an explorers group, and we camped and canoed on the rivers of northern Michigan, acquiring skills of lifesaving, first aid, survival, and outdoorsman skills, which paid off for me.

High School: At Royal Oak Kimball, playing clarinet with the Marching Band, and while being president of our audio visual department of a large 8000 persons student body, I was overseeing lights and sound for four plays, being: ‘Guys and Dolls’, ‘The Night is my Enemy’, ‘Lil Abner, and,

‘Oklahoma’. Graduating (1973), one half year early with honor roll grades. While at Kimball High school (01/03/1972-01/03/1973), I worked at Guardian Alarm Co., the largest privately owned alarm company in our nation, installing and servicing, Burglar, fire and hold up alarms for commercial and residential properties. I worked on ‘chronic ring off’s’ which were hard to troubleshoot systems presenting ‘chronic false alarms’; and for me a kind of MAcGyver’ detective job in the world of troubleshooting before leaving to attend college at, Northern Michigan University. I returned years later after traveling out west to Guardian Alarm Co. which involved maintenance of their buildings, homes and properties, (also, a special masonry and concrete pore project to erect the vaults and garages for the new Guardian Armored Car Co. division) and the owner’s three homes, of Milton Pierce, the father, and two sons Douglas and Richard along with their several properties up north in Michigan.

College: Northern Michigan University, majoring in Forestry and Conservation, with the minor in Art (pottery and weaving). I worked part time managing the Capri’s pizzeria. (01/03/1975-01/03/76) Several years later at Oakland Community College was to pursue computer graphics and more ceramics and pottery, helping to manage our pre-Christmas art fair under the direction of my art teacher and mentor Dr. Charlie Blosser. Our pottery class pre-Christmas fair escalated to the second largest pottery show in the country.

Leaving college out of Marquette Michigan (Lake Superior) and heading west I landed a job logging in the mountains out of Eureka, (Northern) California, working my way up from a choker setter to’ landing chaser’, to timber feller. (Johnston Logging, 01/03/1976-01/031977) Timber felling is the most prestigious logging job requiring an advanced ability of perceiving leverages, and the judgment of weights and measures at a distance. (In my SAT’S I had very high scores in abstract reasoning). This is a job which usually is handed down from a person’s father, and from his father in the industry. It is also the most dangerous of the logging jobs. With my midwest accent I did not

‘sound or look like a logger’, least of all becoming a timber feller, but I had the innate ability of spatial relations to perform the job with high accuracy.

When the largest forest fire still to date broke out in northern California, burning the most board feet in history in the Trinity Mountains range near Mt. Shasta, I joined the fight. Felling timber along fire lines of large Douglas fir, Cedar and Spruce trees that were on fire. Out of three separate camps, the U.S. Army appointed me crew boss of our timber fellers at the ‘Fong’ camp because I demonstrated presence of mind and wherewithal during these dangerous times. The Fong fire just by itself was terrible and employed ten thousand fire volunteers from every U.S. state to help contain these monster fires. During logging I operated a Lorain telescoping shovel as a landing man, and a D5 Cat at the forest fires. After, I migrated north, and falling timber on the Olympic peninsula in Washington state, the world capital of logging, and then on to the south west peninsula of Alaska, felling large timber of Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, and Yellow Cedar. One day at our Kake Island Alaska logging camp, I saved a man’s life. At the moment, the chain saw ran up the back of his leg, and he was bleeding profusely next to a stream. My co-worker did not know what to do so I took his head and placed it in an ice cold stream. I applied direct pressure while instructing a co-worker to apply a tunicate. My knowledge and presence of mind saved his life. Being a big strapping man he had to be flown by float plane to a hospital, losing almost six pints of blood. My boss told me later I saved his life by placing his head in the freezing cold water and the rest. Thanks to my Boy Scout training and my love of science he is alive today. (Clear Creek Logging, 01/03/1978-01/03/1979).

Returning to Michigan I started my own Burglar alarm company, (Ally Alarm), while property managing for the Pierce brothers of Guardian Alarm Co. mentioned above. I also started, owned and operated my ‘Great Lakes Tree & Shrub Co.’ lasting for twenty five years plus. I sold the projects, executed the tree climbing, and was crew leader of my ground crew utilizing the techniques acquired in the logging industry in the North West Pacific. I also did all my own welding, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, machining, and mechanical projects.

During this time I was the alarm systems installer and service Co. for the Schwartz family, who owned Dix Auto Recycling Co. and the Howard Schwartz law firm through the

(01/03/1980-01/03/1995). I learned a lot from the Schwartz family, whom I see as mentors, Howard and his wife, Dragitza Schwartz. At the time they converted the large Recyclers Co. from a paper and memory system to a digital computer system. Under The Schwartz’s direction I learned a lot while I over saw their computer logistics, tree trimming, and objectives for their ‘Dix Auto Auction’, and many various property upkeep and improvement projects involving, carpentry, welding, masonry, concrete, machining, and mechanical maintenances. I consider myself a friend of the family and we have keeping in touch over the years. Mty skills of the computer are Word documents, Excel, and spreadsheet usage.

Restaurant experience: La Scalas Italian restaurant, owned by my parents, I performed in management, serving, doorman, and cleaning services, (01/03/1968-01/03/1972)’. Marquette ski resort. Marquette MI. Being manager of the ‘Mountain bar and grille’, (01/03/1973-01/03/1975). Four Green Fields Irish Bar and restaurant next door to our family owned restaurant as a server, bar back, and door man. (01/03/1968-01/03/1972). I also worked at a Great Scott Supermarket when in high school bagging groceries at first, stocking shelf s, the produce aisle, and working the deli, on an after school job basis.

How I found New Orleans: I returned to my little town of Albion N.Y. to take care of my aging mother. Coming from Portland Oregon, where I was skiing, crafting pottery and bench making at

‘The Shoppeople’ (.com), an artist warehouse district on the Columbia River. Mom had a recurring brain tumor from twenty years previous. I knew she was in trouble from her messages to me so I sold my double wide trailer in Portland Oregon and returned to my town of birth which my parents retired in to take care of Dad with Parkinson’s disease, and then Mom for the last two years of her life. I bought a 28’ Chris Craft and kept it on the Apple Creek River just off Lake Ontario and we boated with it often. After mother passed I chose New Orleans to be my new home, a sportsman’s paradise on the Gulf of Mexico… We have such a rich history here in old New Orleans. I have also performed high steel climbing for several concerts, such as Paul McCartney in Cincinnati Ohio, Rod Stewart in Detroit. Also, hanging glass for the Johnston Brothers. in Southfield Michigan on multi story buildings was among these projects. These were the glass buildings with

(three angstroms of gold flashed plating to reflect sunlight), and other construction projects in the Detroit area, such as Caldwell Construction, a masonry, and concrete outfit. I am an avid welder, and can perform most carpentry, drywall, basic electrical and plumbing tasks. Hobbies: Skiing, tennis, guitar playing, chess, boating, photography, culinary arts, grilling, mechanics, woodworking, carpentry, welding sculpture, engineering, philosophy and science. All of my endeavors have involved handling money, scheduling projects and people, and creating drive, flexibility and purpose in the work atmosphere. During my five years in New Orleans I have been affiliated with the Mayer Yacht Repair group and will eventually give artistic direction to their future marina called Oasislouisana.com. This project has been on hold for a few years now and I need to travel on and find a new adventure for employment.
