Shell Retail’s nearly 14,000 branded gas stations are the most visible presence of Shell in the U.S. to the general public. Shell Oil Products US has a network of about 6,000 branded gasoline stations in the western United States. Motiva Enterprises LLC, a 50/50 joint venture between Shell Oil Company and Saudi Refining, Inc., refines and markets branded products through nearly 8,000 Shell-branded stations in the eastern and southern United States. According to the Lundberg Survey dated December 2009, Shell ranked number one in total gallons sold and in market share in the Unites States.

Mr. Babalola worked as an Architect on the Shell “Florence” project. The goal was to create a proof of concept/prototype of a “Business Services Layer” that would be hosted in the cloud using Windows Azure.

His main duties included the mobile payment functionality wherein a customer could pay at the pump with their smartphone by tapping an NFC tag. The phone would send a request to the Business Services Layer, which deducts funds from the user’s pre-paid balance, applies any available discounts to roll back the price per gallon, and remotely authorizes the pump at the customer location – all via the Internet.

This framework was built using a mix of various technologies including the Android SDK, WCF, the VeriFone Smart Fuel Controller Interface, and Windows Azure.

In the last phase of the project, Mr. Babalola implemented Loyalty Points Awarding functionality, allowing a customer to earn redeemable points in exchange for purchasing specific items that the business wanted to incentivize. Mr. Babalola built a web service that was able to consume loyalty card swipe requests sent by the WinCor point of sale system. The BSL determined whether or not the customer was a member of the points program, and sent data back to the POS specifying which items in their transaction should award points. After the transaction was complete, the number of points awarded was printed on the receipt, and a digital receipt with points information was pushed to the customer’s smart phone.

By working closely with 3rd party vendors, and investigating undocumented features, Mr. Babalola was able to deliver functionality far beyond initial scope.

Part of creating functionality involved researching a 3rd part tool from Casahl called ecKnowledge. This is a migration application that allows one to convert Notes forms to InfoPath forms, including both presentation and back end data. Mr. Babalola also developed an interface between his site and the Spectra HR system.
