Work Experience

Client: Cambia Health Solutions (Portland, OR) Jun 2016 – Till Date

Role: Business Data Analyst

Project Description: Predictive Analytics using Claims Database, This study focused the power of modern analytics on hereditary angioedema (HAE), a single rare disease, because it exhibits features of diseases associated with high costs: rare, hard to diagnose, progressive, and takes a long time from diagnosis to appropriate treatment. Despite the availability of effective therapies, misdiagnosed and under diagnosis of HAE result in a significant burden to the healthcare system. A 3-stage process was applied to a claims database to: a) define the characteristics (diagnoses, procedures, therapies, and providers) of patients in the database already being treated for HAE, b) use those characteristics to create a model of patients with HAE, and c) use the model to identify patients with HAE in the database who were not yet diagnosed. Conclusions: This study successfully demonstrated the ability of this state-of-the-art predictive analysis to find rare-disease patients in a large and complex database. This information could be valuable to claims managers and employers who may realize savings by helping physicians bring these patients to appropriate treatment sooner.

Client: Walgreens (Deerfield, IL) Aug 2015 – June 2016

Role: Business Systems Analyst

Project Description: The Specialty pharmaceuticals provide hope for patients with chronic, complex or rare disease states that do not respond to traditional drug therapies. But like most health plans, our client faced several key challenges for their clinically administered specialty medications; Limited distribution, Administrative burden, High program costs, Appropriate clinical management. The health plan initiated a Medical Injectable Drug (MID) program in 2002, working as their specialty pharmacy provider (SPP). The MID program was developed as a method to manage specialty pharmaceuticals that are commonly administered in physician offices and reimbursed under the medical benefit. Under the program, the specialty pharmacy billed the health plan directly for the cost of the specialty medication and the physician continued to bill for the office visit and the administration. This relieves the physician from needing to bill all three components as is typically required with a more traditional buy and bill process. The program was associated with health plan cost savings as targeted. This was achieved by changing reimbursement channels: about more physician-administered injectable pharmaceuticals changed from reimbursement to physicians, to reimbursement to Walgreens as a single specialty pharmacy provider.
