Research and Development Engineer I (Rotatioal) July 13, 2015 – Present
Rotations:
Product Development (primary packaging):
Worked to develop new products on an agile research and development team
Researched aluminum extrusion, impact extrusion, thermoforming, and injection blow molding for the purposes of producing primary packaging for a new beverage product
Used Jira and Confluence to track project/development goals and communicate with team
Used Solidworks to draft models and prototype new products as well as make technical drawings and specifications
Used technical knowledge of primary packaging requirements and production processes to help guide product design.
Package Development (secondary packaging):
Worked to fix documentation and specification issues and start a new documentation system
Used Artios CAD to make structural secondary and tertiary packaging designs for a new product line
Worked with quality and product supply to identify and fix oxygen ingress issues on a co-manufacturers form fill seal line
Was the only packaging specialist on cross functional team tasked with launching a new beverage product
Sourced lower cost high barrier films to replace an incredibly expensive packaging solution that was providing unnecessary protection to the product
Material Science:
Conduct research and testing to aid in development of a recyclable K-Cup
Tested material properties of HIPS and polypropylene to determine how switching from HIPS to Polypropylene will affect the product and the consumer
Attended mold trials to learn about injection molding of polyesters, bioplastics, and polypropylene
Worked with suppliers and used technical knowledge to identify and test potential new packaging solutions
Learned to perform and interpret a variety of standard tests used in the packaging industry (tensile testing, oxygen transmission rate testing, box crush strength, etc)
Learned to use GaBi LCA software to quantify the environmental impact of Keurigs products/packaging and how design changes might affect Keurig’s environmental impact
