Mobile 862-***-**** *************@*****.*** Robert Johnson is an experienced electrical engineer and FPGA designer with strong VHDL coding credentials. With degrees in Physics and Industrial Design, Robert has a proven record of project completion including years in the advanced development group at Bell Labs and a subsequent spin-off where he worked with Xilinx, Altera and Lattice FPGAs and their corresponding toolsets: Vivado, Quartus, and Diamond. Early on, Robert was a firmware developer for 8031 and Renesas SH-1 µ-controllers written in C and Assembly.
Robert started his career in manufacturing support in an aerospace environment. After he had partially completed a prototype on his own initiative, the company funded completion of a test set which automated the calibration of a Grumman air data computer. Robert continued in other aerospace related roles designing the digital circuitry and firmware for a rocket target drone and an unmanned rotary wing surveillance vehicle. Before starting at Lucent Corporation / Bell Labs, he worked as a contractor reviewing documentation for accuracy, and contractual compliance for an Army software group within Fort Monmouth NJ Army facility.
At Lucent and at Celient, a Lucent Venture Capital spin-off, Robert compiled a list of patents and techniques using Field Programmable Gate Array-based circuits for glitch removal, data analysis, filtering and processing, amplifier linearization, data encryption, and intellectual property protection. He has exceeded expectations in most every job he has filled with his unique brand of curiosity, self-initiative, good humor and propriety, backed by his first rate skill set in prototype builds; generating excitement and conceiving novel solutions out of thin air.
BRITISH AEROSPACE ELECTRONIC SYSTESM - Endicott, NY Oct 2015 - Present
FPGA VERIFICATION ENGINEER
Wrote design verification test plan to company standards containing analysis, board test, and simulation.
Wrote VHDL to simulate the functional operation of data sources following ARINC-429 data formats.
Created Matlab scripts to generate error-free VHDL code from tables of constants maintained in Excel spreadsheet format
Found many subtle errors in VHDL code thought to be production-ready by envisioning problems from unexpected input values or sequences missed by the “I’m here not to rock the boat” mentality.
FIBERSPAN, INCORPORATED - Branchburg, NJ June 2014 - Aug. 2014
DSP Engineer (FPGA Design Engineer)
Created digital synthesizer multi-tone generator using Xilinx Vivado development tools for use in a Zynq-based secure fiber-RF public-safety communication system. System coded in VHDL, Verilog, and Xilinx’s block design method.
CITY THEATRICAL, INC. - Carlstadt, NJ Feb. 2014 - June 2014
Senior Electrical Design Engineer
Investigated root cause of a component failure upon turn-on and designed a non-obvious technique to resolve this problem which had troubled CTI for years.
Manufacturing duties including operating component pick and place machine. Diagnosed and repaired a failed component in their production wave solder machine.
Designed first article prototype of decorative lighting fixture for customer approval.
SPIRENT COMMUNICATION - Eatontown, NJ (contract employment) July 2013 – Sept. 2013
Production Engineering Support
Analog circuit simulation to analyze the effect of a 5% tolerance resistor mistakenly entered on the BOM.
Planned and performed environmental chamber vibration test to quantify the benefit of new mounting brackets which provided dampening to the hard-drive.
Performed root cause analysis of production units which unexpectedly provided insufficient RF isolation between RF receive and RF transmit paths. A relay had been substituted without checking a key parameter. The original relay was discontinued. Identified a distributor in China who had enough in stock to cover planned production eliminating need to redesign the PCB.
ALCATEL-LUCENT - Murray Hill, NJ (contract employment) July 2012 – April 2013
MTS
VHDL simulation of 3.072GHz JESD204B (SERDES) interface on Altera Stratix IV device.
Telecommunications-based system-on-chip (SOC) architecture proposal utilizing DDR3 memory interfacing, AXI memory-mapped and AXI streaming interfaces.
Reverse engineered lightly documented designs.
ROBERT EVEREST JOHNSON
ANDREW CORPORATION - Warren, NJ June 2001– Dec 2011
Principal Electrical Engineer
In Advanced Development Group evolved digital pre-distortion technology from a fixed factory calibration, to self-calibrating amplifiers. My VHDL-based digital pre-distortionFPGA designs are in hundreds of thousands of wireless base stations.
To protect crucial trade secrets, clone-proofed an FPGA-based design with hand-coded VHDL SHA-1 encryption algorithm.
Cost-reduced self-correcting amplifier design reducing the FPGA requirement by 50% through clever means.
Invented circuits I have not seen elsewhere e.g. histogram memory, efficient variable-coefficient finite impulse response filter, random number generation circuits, many others.
Designed streaming I/Q data output & capture boards controlled by Matlab over USB interface.
LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES - Whippany, NJ May 1995 – June 2001
MTS – RF Amplifier Group – Firmware
Part of a six-person group which demonstrated new amplifier linearization technique (digital pre-distortion) which resulted in a new company spin-off from Lucent funded by Lucent Venture Capital.
Developed embedded software in C & assembly languages, for the Renesas, Philips, and Intel CPUs.
Designed twenty-plus designs in VHDL using a variety of FPGAs [Xilinx, Altera, Quicklogic, Atmel, Cypress, AMD].
Supported successful defense of litigation by customer by showing flaw in their network protocol.
Design of DSP algorithms, configurable data path, and efficient multipliers, digital filters etc.
Fluent with customary IO interfaces e.g. SPI, I2C, RS-232 / 423. SRAM, QDR, serial FLASH.
Hardware prototype fabrication skills.
ILEX SYSTEMS - Shrewsbury, NJ Jan 1994 - May 1995
Compliance Engineer – Document Compliance (for Software Directorate at Ft. Monmouth)
