PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

CSX TRANSPORTATION, Richmond, VA 2003 to 2017

Manager Field Investigations – General Claims / Risk Management

Investigate incidents pertaining to train accidents, vehicle accidents, and employee injuries for the entire state of Virginia involving CSX and Amtrak trains on CSX property. Obtain recorded statements from injured parties as well as witnesses to a given incident.

Work with local authorities in documenting the facts surrounding an incident.

Handle 80 plus moderate to complex cases per year and thoroughly review and evaluate all documents including medicals and injury reports to determine a fair and reasonable value and settlement range within departmental guidelines and procedures.

Conduct quarterly periodic case reviews and audits with outside defense counsel on cases in litigation and assist with developing a means for resolution either through settlement, mediation, or trial.

Protect company assets by negotiating reasonable settlements in accordance with Risk Management departmental guidelines. Settle cases within the authorized authority and within the reserves set aside for that case.

Investigate and oversee all property damage claims through the Tell CSX Hotline across Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts regarding homes, vehicles and industries; settled or denied claims as warranted.

Actively participate as a member on the safety team and evidence preservation team. Address employees’ concerns and develop an action plan to devise timely solutions for those areas of concern.

Provide 24/7 coverage on assigned territory which covered the State of Virginia and respond to train accidents, employee incidents, customer concerns, and safety matters received from the public.

Travel throughout assigned territory and note safety concerns with Safety Committee and develop a resolution to resolve.

Report out weekly to the Director General Claims – Risk Management results of activity from the previous 7 days including incident details, resolution and or follow-up tasks necessary to bring incident to resolution. This also included the discussion of high-dollar and more complex lawsuits.

Conduct authority calls with the Assistant Vice President, Executive Vice President, Directors, and in-house counsel regarding cases above $350,000.

Plan District Meetings to update stakeholders on new information which could affect how cases are handled.

CSX TRANSPORTATION, Richmond, VA 1999 to 2003

Engineer

Operated locomotive using proper procedures according to FRA and CSX train handling rules.

Closely monitored speed and brake pipe reservoir on the train.

Made sure hazardous material cars were properly placed in the train to comply with hazardous material-handling rules and ensure the safety of the public and train crew.

Understood the complex system of signals along the railroad tracks and operated the locomotive based on signaling rules.
