I started with small paving company in Ohio. While I enjoyed working for a smaller company, I knew I had to be with a larger company to learn all I could about this business. I labored, raked, ran the screed, distributors, worked in the plant in the winter months and made foreman after ten years. I was involved with all types of paving projects from private to ODOT and everything in between. After five years, I was promoted to General Superintendent. A few years after that, I was again promoted to Estimator/Project Manager. The next nine years I was managing projects and then I was promoted to District Manager in charge of project managers and three plants. For the last nine years, I have been in Virginia as Regional Manager overseeing an operation with two paving crews a grade crew, and milling crew. I was responsible for all operations, including overall plant operations, estimating, and production. I am currently with The O’Leary Asphalt Company in Maryland. I am responsible for the New Construction division, including estimating, public relations, change orders, and project management.

Career Highlights

As a crewmember, I suggested to that we have a specific person in charge of all tools and small equipment so that we would be able to save on replacing these small items. This was adopted and they told me that they saved about $4000.00 over a two-year period.

When I was the General Superintendent for the Ohio Turnpike Project in Boston Heights, the project estimated to utilize two pavers. I spoke with McLean Equipment about setting one machine to pave 28 feet wide. Savings realized from crew costs and one less paver was about $53,000.00. Project was on time and under budget.

We received a Smooth Pavement Award from ODOT for I-77, when I was General Superintendent.

As the General Superintendent for the S.E. Johnson Company, I implemented the first daily job costing system at this company. The five foremen were given laptop computers and utilized the program that I created with excel. By using the excel program they could input on a daily basis their labor, equipment, material, trucking, and daily productions. This was a tremendous tool in getting the foremen involved and responsible. The cost savings and efficiency numbers were amazing. We saw 65% of the projects gain 3 to 5 % in efficiency numbers.

I was instrumental in persuading ODOT to allow the use of a notch wedge joint on the centerline of I-77. This project was milled to the concrete then called for 2 inches of an intermediate. At the time we would have had to pave all the lanes across each night due to the joint height restriction. We used the wedge device on the joint that allowed traffic to cross safely. This reduced the time on the roadway and saved ten days of manpower and equipment. Efficiency realized over profit was $58,000.00.

I was part of a team that worked to attain a Diamond Achievement Award in Cleveland.

I re-organized the paving division in Virginia to be more accountable and quality conscious. I established a good working relationship with VDOT and the Town of Leesburg, Purcellville, and all surrounding communities.

I oversaw the RT. 267 VDOT Toll Road project, as Operations Manager, that earned a Quality Ride Bonus of $127,000.00. This was also the largest production year in Virginia 2006.

The Virginia Division, under my supervision, earned its first excellence in paving award from VDOT in 2009.

Summary

I have a positive attitude and clear direction for getting results. I have been successful at utilizing experienced and inexperienced people to achieve all company goals. I have been an active member of past and present Associations that I have listed above. I have served on various committees pertaining to the asphalt industry, as I believe in staying current and in the mainstream of the industry.

I managed four major Ohio Turnpike projects, including two third lane additions in the late 90’s. I have bid on, and project managed many ODOT highway projects over the years, including all the major arteries in and around Akron and Cleveland, Ohio. I also bid crack sealing and project managed two crack sealing crews in Ohio for three years while I was estimating and managing asphalt projects.

I was in Northern Virginia with a Maryland based contractor overseeing the Leesburg Division. I would also like to add that this division was less than productive before I arrived and we have turned this around and have received a year-end bonus nine straight years. I have managed eight VDOT contracts in Northern Virginia, along with many private and commercial projects, including the Town Of Leesburg Resurfacing for the last eight years.

My career has been diversified, and challenging to say the least. I have worked my way up through the ranks and gained invaluable experience along the way. This experience helped me to be a better manager by knowing and understanding the challenges that the field personnel face every day and being able to help them achieve the best results possible. I like a challenge and I still get excited about every new project.
