I am applying for the position of community care specialist. I believe that the combination of exceptional professional experiences as a legal assistant, legal research specialist, attorney at law admitted in New York, and demonstrated potential make me the perfect candidate for this position. I am confident that I will contribute substantively to your organization. From 1994, I started my career as a legal assistant at Kim Byung Hun Law Office in Seoul Korea while studying international law and international economic law for my master's degree and Ph.D. as a candidate of law. After finishing two master's degrees (LL.M) at the Emory University and George Washington University schools of law in 2002 and 2006, I continued my career in legal assistance as an American law research specialist for a Korean Law firm in South Korea. At the same time, I worked as a legal assistant and lawyer in the U.S.
Your position is of great interest to me. My familiarity and skill of both Korean and English laws have given me valuable tools to assist Korean and American lawyers, as well as their Korean clients. My specialties are two-fold: a legal assistant and attorney at law, and a researcher and Korean-to-English and English-to-Korean translator. First, I assisted and practiced immigration law helping Korean people in Chandler, AZ. In this position, I assisted American attorneys and practiced law for H1B, Naturalization, EB2, NIW, and battered women cases. I also worked on construction and contract disputes between American and Korean parties with other lawyers. As a bilingual speaker, I translated documents written in English to Korean or Korean to English for American and Korean attorneys, and Korean clients in South Korea and in the United States. As a research specialist in South Korea, I translated various materials written in English to Korean for attorneys. I conducted legal research of Korean Law and U.S. Law and prepared memoranda in real estate disputes. Of note were complex cases relating to the qualifications of a university president who had dual Korean-US citizenship, and a case related to U.S. criminal law regarding 'Accomplice Liability'. I also have some experiences as a court translator in Seoul Korea and Chandler, AZ.
I recently worked on mediation to resolve conflict between American and Korean parties who had divergent points of view about a contract. While closely analyzing the issues, I tried to resolve this matter in a diplomatic manner, focusing on the cultural matters because both parties had different ideas rooted in different cultural perspectives. I have expertise in Korean and American laws, fluency in two languages and cultures, and a desire to work to favorably resolve the issues for all involved parties. As a personal project, I am currently translating U.S. Advertising Law written in English into Korean to introduce U.S. law to South Korea.
A personal goal is to devote myself to removing barriers in the form of misunderstandings or incompatibilities between Korean and American laws. Even though many Korean scholars and lawyers study American laws, there remain enormous misunderstandings about American laws to them. I plan to translate various American laws into the Korean language and dedicate myself to improving understanding about American laws and its legal system for Korean people in the U.S. and South Korea. Based on my experiences in law firms in two countries, educational experience in U.S. and Korean schools, and adeptness with Korean and American laws and languages, I am very confident that I can very effectively perform the duties as a community care specialist.
