Maintenance Manager

La Chiquita is a premium tortilla manufacturer supplying products to Taco Bell, Hormel Foods, McDonalds, Burger King, and Chi-Chi Tortillas. The company also has their own brand that is supplied to Latin based restaurants throughout the southeast.

La Chiquita brought me in to turn around a failing maintenance department of 15 personnel and in a short time I had accomplished just that. Through training and driving a lean objective, the company made the turn to modern maintenance leadership.

Reduced down time from 8 per month to less than 1 increasing annual output by $1.2M

Reduced maintenance operating cost by 8% annually while company production output increased by 110% with a conservative $200k cost avoidance.

The Navy requested assistance in an critical active duty role until November 2015 which I accepted.

The Mid-Atlanta Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) Norfolk Naval Base required a strong leader of Sailors and I was requested to fulfill this role. While there I oversaw the development and training of junior engineering Sailors in electrical, electronic, and mechanical workshops preparing them for shipboard and shipyard work along with proper military protocol.

Maintenance Manager

Elite Storage Solutions is a steel racking manufacturer of custom racking solutions around the world. Annual sales are in excess of $300 million. Their advantage over the competition is Elite’s ability to fabricate to the customer’s need verses the customer selecting from the racking company’s list of standard product.

As the Maintenance Manager, I turned around a struggling department consisting of 4 sites, 4 supervisors, and 15 technicians maintaining 160+ pieces of equipment, 2 store rooms, and 3 technical repair shops. This position was responsible for all expansions and equipment additions.

A few samples of the positive changes I brought about to Elite are:

Purchases CMMS system for all sites to ensure maintenance and store room tracking and purchases were accurate and tracked, restructured the department for quicker response times and efficiency due to skills, and reduced down time by 20% while increasing facilities output by 80%. This brought about a $200k+ annual cost reduction.

Negotiated all new capital equipment purchases for sites saving $450k off vendor price.

Senior Maintenance and Sourcing Manager

Genco is a major U.S. supply chain, logistics and contract packaging corporation providing solutions

for North America’s top retailers, consumer products companies, technology and healthcare companies.

Working closely with the General Managers, I oversaw operational procedures, maintenance, and safety guidelines for engineering and maintenance at 120 Genco sites. Challenges involved plant site integrity, training of team employees, upkeep and updating of facility and materials-handling

equipment, as well as electrical, automation and structural requirements. Coming from the original position as Maintenance Manager with Genco, I am their PLC, automation, and MHE expert making all critical decisions in all of these areas on a national level.

As sustainability issues became an initiative for Genco, I was involved in the design and implementation of procedures to respond to the increasing need for waste containment, efficiency and cost savings for the company. Highlights of projects and accomplishments as Director of Maintenance include:

$2.0 M average annual savings for Genco and multiple customers through strategic negotiations of new equipment and electrical cost savings beyond the company’s standard pricing.

Managed total capital expenditures of $7.5M annually

Implemented a green initiative that saved Genco $282K annually and removed 20K+

pounds of packing materials from landfills.

In my secondary role as Senior Sourcing Manager, I critiqued Genco’s critical engineering contracts, major plant purchases and acquisitions to correspond with cost, suitability and needs requirements.

FLOWERS BAKERY OF SUWANEE LLC, Suwanee, GA Aug 2005 Apr 2008

Assistant Chief Engineer

Flowers Foods is a leader in the U.S. baking industry. The publicly-held $1B annual revenue company maintains some of the most efficient and technologically advanced bakeries in the country, producing and marketing breads, buns, rolls, snack cakes, and pastries, which are distributed fresh to retail and foodservice customers in the East, South, and Southwest.

As Engineering Manager at the Suwanee operation, 4 Engineering Supervisors were direct reports, with 24 Engineers, Technicians, and support personnel as down line reports in this high-speed bakery operation. I managed $2.5M in inventory and $1.5M in payroll. Engineering problem solving was primary among my responsibilities, combined with a range of real-time and planning tasks that included:

Plant personnel job assignments, quotas, payment records, work schedules, personnel issues and conducting training on engineering systems for all subordinates.

Sourcing all plant purchases, tracking department expenditures, minimizing equipment down time, ensuring preventive maintenance and timely resolution of equipment engineering issues.

Managing outside contractors involved with new lines and equipment.

KROESCHELL OPERATIONS INC., Jefferson, GA Oct 1999 Aug 2005

Technical Supervisor

Kroeschell is a third party maintenance/operations provider for Caterpillar Inc. I was one of 3 Supervisors overseeing contract workers, cost analysis, down time reporting and corrections, training, hiring and payroll accountability for 19 Technicians and $2.8M in equipment stores. MY specially was PLC programming of the independent units. Up time was continuous at 97-99% on a maximum of 386 pieces of equipment.

Utilized and conducted training on Allen Bradley, RS Logic, and AART programming languages and software systems for control programming, as well as supervised the operation of a large array of additional automation systems, controllers and equipment.

Implemented an education-and-recovery program that saved $375k in lost down time.
