RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Research Associate – Michael Strong Lab, National Jewish March 2017 – present
My research focus on lung microbiome bioinformatics data of cystic fibrosis patients. Using wrappers such as QIIME to analyze microbiome data.
Research Lab Assistant - Mary Reyland Lab, CU Anschutz March 2016 – March 2017
The loss of Protein Kinase C delta (PKCd) in normal salivary glands protects these cells from radiation-induced cell death. My research is focused on understand the molecular pathway of PKCd in salivary glands that would allow these cells to survive radiation damage.
Optimized current western blot protocol to allow better analysis of high molecular weight phosphorylated proteins
oImproved resolution of high molecular weight proteins around 300-500 KDa
Developed a new protocol to analyze DNA damage using Comet Assay
Planned, executed, and analyzed data for my projects
o1 departmental oral presentation about a molecular pathway that might offer radioprotection for normal salivary glands
oEffective use of GraphPad Prism to perform proper statistical analysis on my data
Rotation Student – Traci Lyons Lab, CU Anschutz November 2015 – February 2016
In the Lyons lab, we found that BC patients with high levels of Semaphorin 7a (Sem7a) had lower survival rate in both Hormone Receptor positive (HR+) and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). My project analyzes if estrogen and/or progesterone promote Sem7a expression in HR+ cells to result in increased tumor cell invasion.
Data mining for publicly available data on breast cancer patients treated with letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor, to analyze if our protein of interest, semaphorin7a, was upregulated over the course of treatment.
Junior Specialist Researcher – Douglas Kellogg Lab via Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) July 2014 – June 2015
Regulatory mechanisms of cell growth and size regulation are fundamental processes for every cell. Yet these mechanisms remain elusive. In Douglas Kellogg’s lab at UCSC, we analyze cell cycle regulators that modulate growth in budding yeast.
PCR primer design and cloning to generate mutant yeast strains
Mating pheromone synchronized/release time course
Coordination with a Graduate student to address his hypothesis-driven research
Work result in co-author of 1 article in-progress in JCB
Research Assistant – Robert Nissen Lab, CSULA November 2012 – June 2014
A significant proportion of congenial anomalies have jaw defects. Studying basic pathways of craniofacial development will strengthen our understanding of causes in human jaw defects. In Robert Nissen’s lab at CSULA, our goal was to analyze how a single gene, wdr68, plays an integral role in craniofacial development of the zebrafish.
Microinjection of mRNA into zebrafish embryo
Time management skills through managing to perform weekly experiments on top of 16+ credits per quarter of undergraduate courses and holding leadership positions for a social and a philanthropic organization on campus (Earth LA and Circle K International)
Effective communications about my research
o3 poster presentations about my research at local and national Conferences
oExtensive lab notes on my research, which allowed Dr. Nissen to use my data for a publication without further contact about the research I performed
oCo-author of 1 publication in PloS One
AWARDS AND AFFILIATIONS
Student Senate, CU Anschutz September 2016 – present
oStudent representation for the Graduate Programs at the CU Anschutz
Planning and executing fun, interactive, and education events for the student body, such as a Chinese New Year celebration for the student population
Personal Statement Workshop host for CSULA September 2016 and September 2015
oEffective Leadership through working with LSAMP to create this hands-on workshop for undergraduate students interested in applying for Graduate School
oEffective communication with LSAMP coordinator and undergraduate students
Reading and revising students’ personal statements one month before workshop
Explaining effective personal statements contents that Graduate programs are looking for in statements
Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) at UCSC July 2014 – June 2015
oNIH funded research opportunity for post-baccalaureate students located at UCSC. PREP allows students to conduct research with UCSC faculty mentor, courses to prepare for GRE, opportunities to participate in research seminars and journal clubs, and promote travel to conferences to present the research.
