Summary

From the age of sixteen I began working in my father's real estate office, located in Lan- ham, MD, and continued there in different capacities until after I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a Bachelors degree in History. I began working from the bottom, cleaning office buildings, doing various unskilled jobs on construction sites as well as assorted chores at the real estate office. I worked up through progressive levels of responsibility until I eventually assisted in the management of the sales office and entirely managed two office buildings in Prince Georges County – the Finns Lane Building and Paramount Building.

Most of my later activities were concerned with commercial real estate including the marketing of office condominiums and other commercial sites as well as participating in the development and management of commercial buildings, both office and retail. This wide range of responsibilities allowed me to gain substantial experience in the tech- nical aspects of the various areas of real estate. It also gave me the opportunity to learn to work cooperatively and productively with a broad range of people. I eventually did my first solo project. This was the renovation of a townhouse in Logan Circle, Washington, DC. This project, which involved the near complete removal of the interior of a one hundred year old three story townhouse followed by rebuilding the inte- rior of the shell, presented many new issues that I was able to successfully solve. After that, the majority of my work was in commercial development, particularly in a phase of the development process called Pre-development. This involved site finding, project planning and design as well as subdivision and rezoning. This required me to work closely with engineers and architects, attorneys and representatives of local gov- ernment and community groups. Many of the issues involved in these activities were technical, complex and politically sensitive, nevertheless, I enjoyed solving them. I participated, as a full partner, in a relatively large residential subdivision called Barclay Estates in Selbyville, Delaware. My area of responsibility in this project was the pre-de- velopment phase.

Although much of what I have done in real estate involved working with computers, from various types of accounting, to graphics – both design and Photoshop – and word processing, I always enjoyed working with people, and achieving solutions based on co- operation.
