Client: MetLife Inc. – Somerset, NJ May 2010 – Sep 2014
Project: Risk Frontier
Role: Developer
Economic Capital is used for measuring and reporting market and operational risks across a financial organization. It is the amount of capital the firm should have to support any risks it takes. Moody’s KMV RiskFrontier is one of the industry standards for Economic Capital models and is used by most financial institutes including MetLife.
RiskFrontier calculates required credit risk economic capital for the entire portfolio, enabling better understanding of enterprise-wide credit risk.
It is also suitable for Basel II Pillar 2 purposes and advanced credit risk management, including risk/return analysis and portfolio management.
RiskFrontier is suitable for portfolios spanning corporate, SME, retail, sovereigns, structured asset investments, and more.
Specifically, RiskFrontier deals with multiple asset types: loans, CDS, CDOs, basket default swaps, equities, and so on.
RiskFrontier is market-driven and uses a bottom-up approach to analysis. It employs a simulation model and provides several ways of viewing portfolio output to improve understanding and identify problem areas.
The complete process can be summarized in the following four high level steps
Data Load: Risk Frontier application consumes data from various sources like IDEAS, CRTS, Legal Entity, MUREX etc. Monthly batch job runs on maestro to consume data in Risk Frontier application database
Data Integration: After month end data gets completed, next step is Data Integration. Here the raw data is massaged and it is prepared to be input source data for Moody’s KMV Risk Frontier application (third party vendor application).
Data Transfer: The data gets imported to Risk Frontier databases through Transfer to Risk Frontier step. When the data is imported to vendor application, with the help of predefined data settings (created by business users) user start the portfolio analysis. Here the imported data gets into consideration for random sampling and multiple simulations, which are deemed to produce a better refined economic capital value. The data gets stored in one of the Moody’s application database
Create Economic Capital (EC): Last step is to create Economic Capital (EC) report. MetLife Risk Frontier application pulls data from the Moody’s Risk Frontier data and presents it into well-formatted EC report. The final output of EC report data is further consumed by IDEAS and Tampa group of MetLife!
