Perioperative Nurse
Responsibilities:
•Delivers and/or ensures the delivery of quality pre and postoperative nursing care
•Identifies high risk patients and assists staff in align with them effectively
•Manages patients/visitors/staff disturbances/complaints with tact and diplomacy
•Prepare the operating room for the scheduled procedure by ensuring the necessary equipment is available and in working order, supplies needed preoperatively, intra-operatively, and postoperatively are available.
•Open necessary instruments and supplies needed for the procedure in a sterile manner.
•Pass off necessary medications to be used during the procedure.
•Discuss preoperative, intra-operative and postoperative process with patient and family, allowing for questions to be asked and ensuring there is complete understanding of the procedure and process.
•Administering preoperative medications as ordered by the physician.
•Positioning the patient as necessary for the scheduled procedure
•Preparing the operative site by removing any hair that may be present and cleaning the site with a sterile cleaner.
•Plugging all equipment in as cords are passed off the sterile field and handing off supplies as needed during the procedure.
•Responsible for making sure any specimens collected during the procedure are properly handled and taken to the lab along with the necessary paperwork.
•Transfer of the patient to the recovery area while providing report to the recovery nurse.
•Cleaning the operative rooms following procedures and returning all equipment to its storage area when not in use, as well as returning unused supplies to their proper location.
•Documentation of preoperative explanation with the patient and family, procedure to include times, equipment used, dressings, specimens collected, any implants utilized, positioning, prepping, staff present, and charges for supplies.
•The position required taking call for emergency procedures.
•Procedures to include general surgery, orthopedics, cataracts, ENT, and cesarean sections.
•Training for the position included:
•Two weeks in the instrument room cleaning, packaging and returning sets back to their proper order
•Two weeks performing sterilization of the instruments utilizing the autoclaves
•Six weeks of training with a preceptor and taking buddy call, until comfortable to perform the above tasks on my own efficiently and safely.

•Responsible for performing dressing changes to include WoundVac monitoring and dressing changes
•Ensuring safety of at risk patients, rounding every hour, escorting to the restroom or moving from the bed to the chair utilizing safe practice
•Open communication with patients and family to ensure there was understanding of the care plan and personalize to each patient as necessary
•Carry out physician orders as placed and as necessary
•Training for this position included:
•Six weeks with a preceptor, until comfortable to carry out the above responsibilities safely and efficiently
