TAMPO TOOL INC., Schaumburg, IL (Div of TransTech America) 1988 – 10/1990 Leading manufacturer of custom pad printing and decorating equipment. (Now owned by ITW Inc.) Engineering Manager

Headed a Design Engineering department which designed custom pad printing equipment for a large variety of applications including printing automotive dashboard knobs, Barbie doll faces, graduations on syringes, golf balls, etc.

• Developed new concepts and designs for high speed, state of the art, precision parts handling and indexing systems for multicolor, "continuous" rotary printing applications. Mechanical drives with complicated gearing and belt drives were used. Drives were inherent to those used on rotary printing and packaging machinery. The majority of equipment was custom designed, but standard printing equipment was also developed. These precision machines print with a registration accuracy of plus or minus .001 inch. Some examples of printing applications: Print graduations on outer diameters of medical syringes at rate of 500/minute; print two rows of golf balls two colors and separate balls into respective discharge chutes (balls numbered 1 through 4); Automotive dashboard knobs; taillight lenses; Barbie doll faces; etc,

• Led the engineering team in development of several new printing equipment standards, increasing overall sales by approximately 25%.

• Developed several custom equipment including large, complex, carousel-type printing machines for decorating plastic Downy bottle necks for Procter and Gamble.

CRESTWOOD MACHINE COMPANY, Schaumburg, IL

Custom machine builder of cam-driven automatic assembly machines. Project Leader

Developed machine and station concepts for machine and managed those projects and respective design teams. In parallel, I solo designed and self-managed my own machine development projects.

• Responsible for creating concepts, engineering layouts, details and parts lists for large scale, one-of-a-kind, automatic assembly machines. Supervised Detailers, Designers and other Engineers on projects which were under my jurisdiction. Coordinated documentation package and monitored overall design process while generating my own machine design layouts and concepts. Also assisted in the development of lengthy project proposals, both written and pictorial.

• The majority of machine projects included the automatic assembly of electronic components such as card edge connectors, switches, I.C. lead frames, etc. These machines were mainly in-line machines rather than indexed-dial rotaries.

• The in-line machines utilized "walking beam" devices, servo or cam driven, for indexing piece parts through machine from point to point in an in-line manner. Cycle rates varied from 30 to 600 assembly cycles/minute, depending on type of product. Most mechanical motions were derived from rotary cams. The later projects included development of the latest state-of-the-art high speed terminal insertion machines (contact insertion "stitchers") for a variety of electrical interconnect devices.

• Multi-axis servo drives were later utilized for maximum flexibility and to minimize set-up time for various product sizes whose insertion patterns can be varied in any possible combinations

• Developed the first high-speed servo powered contact stitching machine.

• Developed standards and analytical methods for designing rotary mechanical cams. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS (CORTRON DIV.), Elmhurst, IL
