2008-2013

Co-Founder, VP, Senior Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical Research and Design related to military and commercial RF and mechanical projects. Military research projects (with security clearance) included design and fab of machinery, molds, and 3D CAD design & testing of military antennas & electronics. Owned and operated full service CNC metal part fabrication shop.

Helped develop, patent, and manufacture sophisticated wideband 3D Vivaldi antennas and covert “mudflap” antennas for IED robot communications and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detection & disarming. (www.greenwavescientific.com)

Commercial digital HDTV antennas included initial product concept, materials and process development, verification, antenna design and testing, and high volume tooling for manufacturing. My responsibilities included hiring, financing, and general administrative duties in addition to Technical direction and co-management of Companies. Greenwave/Mohu (approx 50-75 total employees) is currently a leader in the US digital TV antenna market, approx $20 Million/yr.

Sold Greenwave/Mohu at the end of 2013 to relocate to New Mexico near family. Parata Systems (ME consultant/contractor)

2007-2008

Mechanical Product Design Engineer

Incorporated conflicting design constraints from initial lab research prototype devices into a complex but practical plastic injection molded device to function as “engine” of next generation advanced high speed pill handling & counting machine, now in production.

Several patentable ideas conceived and documented for pill dispensing applications

Implemented high volume injection molding and various bonding processes for reliable, consistent solutions and production refinements.

Apex Technologies, Inc (NC)

2001-2007

Vice President, Cofounder-Owner

Started and managed startup company in Research Triangle Park (RTP, NC) using sophisticated optical machine/process for producing 3D Molded Plated Substrates

(3DMPS TM) to package semiconductor electronics and make small antennas. Proprietary processes and equipment licensed to large companies for implementation into high volume cellphone production. Managed all Apex business related items including hiring, accounting, purchasing, PQR quality certification, space leasing, and licensing in addition to full time engineering of innovative plating, high vacuum deposition processes, and CNC machines.

Received Sandia National Labs “Gold Supplier” award in 2004, gave guest presentation at awards banquet- for production of highly specialized 3DMPS neutron generator components for Sandia Labs projects. All parts met extremely stringent quality specifications with 100% compliance and on-time delivery.

Designed and built large automatic production machines with integrated computer vision, molding, plating and chemical treatment processes for making 3DMPS parts- including 3D MEMs packages, LED packaging, missile nosecone antennas and frequency selective surfaces (Raytheon), cellphone antennas (Ericsson), chip carriers, satellite antennas, aircraft resistance heaters (Goodrich) for de-icing applications, plus many other innovative solutions to existing problems.

Produced new parts using injection molded plastics (using high performance engineering polymers), plastic plating chemistry processes, and proprietary 3DMPS processes with uniquely designed computer controlled machinery and automatic PC vision inspection/feedback/correction systems for extremely accurate results.

Implemented high vacuum processing machines and processes used for plasma etching/cleaning, vacuum/vapor deposition plating (PVD), and semiconductor processing.

Ericsson, RTP (NC) 1997-2000

Team Leader/ Engineer, Advanced Product Development Group, North America

Conceived and developed working models for many new cellphone handset concepts during early stages of US cellphone expansion in 1998-2000. Weekly meetings and presentations given to RTP site manager/Ericsson president of North American operations. Worked as Team Leader for Advanced Development Group in 1998- 2000 consisting of 4-6 highly skilled engineers dedicated to making functional models for new cellphone concepts. Several new molded plastic handset designs taken from concept to extremely high volume production status.

Designed and completed first wireless LAN card at Ericsson- long before advent of common wireless LAN devices for laptops. Developed extremely challenging packaging- using thin multilayer PCB housed in custom fabricated thixo-molded magnesium frame with stamped stainless covers.
